Dirtybird#11
You really couldn't have asked for a better start to the Quinn Era than a 31/24 win last night. But let's get a little deeper an take a look at the good/the bad/and the funny!Of course like most fans we where anxious to see what our rookies had to offer, and I walked away personally somewhat underwhelmed. Based off of last night I learned that Beasley and Collins both aren't NFL ready just yet. I seen too many plays where they were taken outta the play just because they are to small! Both of them need to hit the gym an get bigger in order to really develop, but I guess that'll come with time. I can however say Hardy and Jake Rodgers played fantastic! Hardy had some solid catches while Rodgers really impressed me with his crisp technique and awareness last night. He definitely looked to be our best backup OT for the season which IMO isn't a bad thing. Now it wasn't just all about how the rooks looked... there where quite a few 2nd/3rd year players who impressed as well. These players are Tylerr Starr,Maliciah Goodman, and Stansley Maponga. All 3 of them provided great play with the 2nd unit and really stated a case for them to be involved a little more in the starting lineup. Another player who stood out was Mbu. He played excellent for a UDFA on a crowded interior dline. He really made a case last night to be on the final 53 this pushing Cliff Matthews off the team. The STs unit was still nasty as ever. Of course Weems,Bartu, and Stupar held there own as gunners but what about Bradford?? It seems like we've found ourselves another hammer on STs! He also made multiples plays at ILB. Now what about this Quinn made secondary? First things first Trufant DID NOT PLAY last night. Instead our starters where Phillip Adams and Robert Alford and I must say the starting unit was solid, but it's the depth that's a real concern. Not only was Collins bad, but Southward also underwhelmed last night. The only positives about the secondary after the 1st team exited was Safety depth. We have plenty! Godfrey,Allen, and Threzie all played fine and looked capable of starting. Oh and I almost forgot about our starting unit LBs. they played amazing! I swear Tennessee only completed 1 pass down the middle in the 1st half. The rest where sideline throws where our secondary didn't get down far enough to cover the flats in our cover 3. But all in all Worrilow,Durant, and Schofield played excellent all made some great plays! Now what about the offense? The 1st team did as expected as they marched down the field ASAP for a methodical 7, but after that Yates made it go to crap real quick. The only reason he put points on the board was because of our defenses TO and where he got the ball. Renfree owned him last night as he came in for a grand total of 1 drive which ended up being the game winner where he only missed 1 pass play to #87 in the back of the end zone. The offensive line pass blocking wise was fantastic. I was very impressed with how they grinded last night and Ryan actually had a clean pocket for most of the night. I can firmly say the starting unit without a doubt should be Matthews,Chester,Hawley,Stone,Schrader. No questions asked. They clicked and gave Matt plenty of time to carve up the Titans. But what about the 2nd team? Aside from Rodgers who I already said played great they looked meh. The Guard spot is a huge worry if Stone or Chester go down because Asamoah looked very uncomfortable in the ZB scheme while Persons (#68) was getting owned at least once a drive. Also Peter Konz practically snapped his way off the roster with his miscues at center last night. I really think Quinn could call up Long or Conolly just as insurance cause right now we need it. The running game was very stagnant by both teams at the beginning, but as the game went on it started getting better. I can say Jerome Smith should start next game solely based off the pounding he put on Tennessee to close out the game. Also Antone I believe pulled a hammy so yet another RB is down for us.... I really think we should contact some like CJ2K and kick the tires so we have someone who can take most of the beating in these preseason a games cause when the regular season starts we gotta have Freeman,Coleman, and Smith ready cause we're definitely a RB by comity team. I'd also like to note some standouts which are Levine Toilolo,Nick Williams,Jake Rodgers, and Sean Renfree. All of those guys where great and they really did show up to impress! So that about raps up the highlight of our first taste of the Quinn era and with it I gotta send off a final 53 based off of last nights and TCs performances....QB-Matt Ryan,Sean RenfreeRB-Devonta Freeman,Tevin Coleman,Antone Smith,Jerome SmithFB-Patrick DimarcoWR-Julio Jones,Leonard Hankerson,Roddy White,Nick Williams,Justin Hardy,Eric WeemsTE-Levine Toilolo,Jacob TammeLT-Jake Matthews,Jake RodgersLG-Chris ChesterC-Joe HawleyRG-James Stone,Jon AsamoahRT-Ryan SchraderDE-Adrian Clayborn,Maliciah Goodman,Vic Beasley,Stansley MapongaDT-Paul Soliai,Ra'Shede Hageman,Tyson Jackson,Johnathan Babineaux,Joey MbuOLB-Obrien Schofield,Brooks Reed,Tyler Starr,Joplo BartuMLB-Justin Durant,Paul Worrilow,Allen Bradford,Nate StuparCB-Desmond Trufant,Robert Alford,Phillip Adams,Jalen Collins,Dez Southward,Kevin WhiteSS-William Moore,Kemal IshmaelFS-Charles Godfrey,Ricardo AllenK/P-Matt Bryant,Matt BosherKR/PR-Antone Smith,Eric WeemsLS-Josh HarrisPSTerron WardCarlton MitchellMarquis SpriullAkunnaeMickey ShulerBernard ReedyAdam ReplongleRobert TherezieMichael FordGrady Jarrett1 spot remains (Final 53) and I personally think it should definitely be used on a FA OLINEMAN!!!!!! Dirtybird#11
Oh and 1 more thing Falcons fans should be excited for is that we finally have someone on the sidelines with a set of balls! Quinn when the 4th and 1 was given to us he wasn't shy about sending Yates back out there to pick it up.

Dirtybird#11
great write up the one area you were wrong on was beasly go back and watch again. the titans were already so worried about him they double teamed him, I have it recorded so I'll definitely be rewatching but from what I saw Lewan and Beasley both had there fair share of moments against one another, but I tip my cap (Smitty reference intended) to Lewan for holdings his own. As for the rest of that Titans OLINE holy cow they're bad!
Guest Gritz
Disagree strongly with your assessment about Beasley. He fought one of the better young tackles in the league in Lewan to a draw...affected the INT by Marriota by getting his arm up, made a great tackle on a RB...young man had a good night for a rook who only saw 10 snaps. I like his effort but he needs to keep bulking up cause right now the LEO in my eyes should be Schofield or Maponga.

JRid
Good to hear that Jake Rodgers played well. I don't remember hearing or seeing his name mentioned so I was curious. Did Konz really suck or was it just that one bad snap? How amazing was it to see T. Jackson and Soliai teaming up for a sack? After last season nobody saw that coming and that is a very good sign. Our 1st team Offense and Defense was top notch and very fun to watch. Who came in at NB first? Did Adams move to NB or what? I noticed a couple of times Maponga had an incredibly quick first step. Tony Diesel
You want to cut Devin Hester? We will keep 3 tight ends9 d-backs on the 53... not going to happen. Anyhow, I agreed with a lot of what you said. I was pleasantly surprised by Bradford, Starr, and Mbu on defense.

Well, they got it, so I guess NOW we can go ahead and get excited after watching our team in the first preseason game destroy a team that's as dysfunctional if not more dysfunctional than we were last year, with a rookie QBI'll give the kid one thing, he has great potential to be entertaining

I'd rather have Jake Matthews relive his Long Snapper days at TAMU and play Center for us before we let Konz start. Our interior dline was and will be solid. We have soooo much depth inside its not even funny. The 1st NB I believe was Kevin White.... Might be mistaken

vel
Good post OP. Keep it up. Don't let some of your less than fans get to you. I disagree that Beasley and Collins and the rookies were underwhelming. I think there was a lot of hype and excitement around them, especially Beasley with everyone looking for double digit sacks. Collins was abused, but I don't think many expected otherwise. Now if he was our #11 overall pick like the Vikings corner, we could worry. But Collins is our #4 corner right now. I'm just glad we have a HC who likes to attack on defense and put his guys in positions to win vs what the scheme dictates.
