Southward And Collins

At one time, I thought Southward was going to develop into a solid DB - assuming that he would stay healthy, work his hardest on and off the field, and find the right position to utilize his considerable skills. I guess I was wrong ...... that sux.

I must admit that I didn't see a lot of Collins in college, but by most accounts, he was a good value where we picked him. With that high of a pick, I hoped he would be in the top 3 CB battle -

since the nickel package is run as much as any other set. Alford has shown to me that he belongs, even if they wanted him to cover the slot sometimes depending on the matchups.

Bottom line: Southward and Collins both have the size and speed that teams covet these days, however, I will be very disappointed if one does not become an 'impact' player in our secondary.

Collins is a rookie and Southward is in his 2nd year. I'll wait and see.

Exactly. Southward came in last year on a dysfunctional defense, and probably needs another year of development before he can be written off. Collins, I have no idea about, and nothing good has been reported about his time in camp so far.

These were high picks. What is it? Some say they look stiff and slow to react - I don't know. A corner needs to have several attributes .... but swivel hips, sticking to the receiver like glue, and having ball awareness are some of them. You would think these qualities would have been evident (or not) when the scouts watched all that tape.

The measurables make them high ceiling prospects. The game film took them out of the first round.

A lot of folks complained about taking high floor but low ceiling guys. Seems we've changed that up taking guys with low floors but have high ceiling potential if they can play to their speed and measurables.

I'll be the first to admit that I was hoping to hear more positives coming out of camp about Collins. But seriously... The kid hasn't even played in a pre-season game, yet, let alone an actual contest. I'm just hoping that we see him on the field contributing by late in the season.

As for Southward, he's basically a rookie at this point, too. New position, new scheme, new coaches. What little experience he got last year probably isn't making a big difference. I'm not really expecting him to be much more than a backup and special teams body.

Long story short, it's WAY too early for any complaints about these two or talks of them being busts.

Southward looked o.k. for a rookie at safety last year. I hope he can stick around and be developed, but there is a chance he doesn't make the 53. Kevin White was getting 1st team reps and I don't think I've even seen Southward's name in a report from camp.

Quinn will have to cut some pretty good players to get down to 53. Will he be able to keep 6 CBs with all the DLinemen and LBs he will have to keep? If not it will be Southward or White to the practice squad and it seems White has the lead now. Southward has been injured some to so that put him behind.

Collins only played in 10 college games so not just you, but no one has seen a lot of tape on him. He has a very high ceiling however and will most likely play sparingly this year as he develops. Southward has made a tough position change, but the dude has the size and speed to become a very good corner.
