FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons defensive end Malliciah Goodman, who got off to a slow start in training camp, had offseason surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee.

“He came back and is now starting to round into form,” defensive line coach Bryan Cox said.

Goodman, 6-foot-4 and 276 pounds, was drafted in the fourth-round of the 2013 draft. He made 10 starts and played in all 16 games last season.

He finished with 17 tackles and two forced fumbles. He played 594 snaps and was the 31st rated defensive end of the group who played more than 50 percent of their team’s snaps, according to profootballfocus.com.

The Falcons are trying to find a spot for him in the new defense.

“I’m willing to play whatever role that they have for me,” Goodman said. “I’ve played some Leo, some three technique and some four. I’ve been all over the place. I’m just filling in whatever role that is there for me.”

Goodman expects to see some action against Tennessee in the exhibition opener at 7 p.m. Friday at the Georgia Dome.

“Right now, we are just trying to get our defense plugged in and be sound as a group,” Goodman said. “In the (exhibition) season, we are going to try and play like unit like we have been trying to practice every day.”

Good to know what spots they have had Goodman at in practice. Looks like in base he is playing LEO or head-up DE (4T). And in nickel/nascar he is playing a pass rushing DT (3T) or still at LEO.

I think Goodman is probably safe to make the Final 53 man roster, but I'm not sure whether or not he'll be active on gamedays. I know he has played a lot of special teams for us in the past, so that could be a key factor for him in earning playing time.

Right now, I see us carrying nine defensive linemen: Beasley, Biermann, Goodman, Hageman, Babineaux, Jarrett, Soliai, Jackson, and Clayborn. You'd have to think one of them will be part of the gameday inactives, so that's probably Goodman, or maybe Jarrett since he may have less overall value since I doubt he plays much on special teams.

I'd like to see us keep Maponga and Mbu around on the practice squad. I think Maponga is still eligible for the PS, given the recent eligibility rule change.

Goodman sux and its not from a bad wheel. He might play friday, but I doubt he does anything noticable. He has very little chance of making the team.

I had high hopes for this guy when we drafted him. I figured those freakish long arms would be a thing of QB nightmares. Time for him to start producing

I guess we should ignore him being asked to gain 20 pounds and moved to DT last year...

I don't see him as a LEO.

Probably why I ain't the coach, but I see him at the LDE position.

We don't have a LDE position. But I'm guessing you mean the strongside DE. That is a similar position he was asked to bulk up and play for us previously, which obviously didn't work out too well.

Quinn sees something else in him, which is why he asked Goodman to drop back down into the 265 pound range and become a lighter and quicker edge rusher who can slide inside in nascar packages. So obviously our head coach whose specialty is defensive linemen views him as at least a part-time LEO, even if others don't.

He wasn't exactly tearing the NFL up 20 lbs lighter at DE before then either though....

If he survives this season's cuts (Quinn can't replace everyone in one year from Last year's horrible D personnel) , my guess he'll be gone next season

Never said he was. He hasn't gotten a fair shake in my opinion. First year he was a rookie. Second year he was asked to blow up and play out of position in the dumbest scheme of all time.

I agree though. He's got a short leash to show something soon or he'll be gone because the DL is getting deep.
