caveman
I'm tired of hearing about how weak our OL is, and how we have absolutely no depth in case of injury. I just know I would feel more secure if Long and Mathis were on the team.

k-train
If either of those dudes were actually as good as people think based on their names, they'd already be with a team, learning the playbook, etc. If they were the saviors of the o-line that people here claim & $5m a year was a bargain for their services, a team in need would have snatched them up by now. However, they keep talking to teams & neither is getting signed by ANYONE for several months now.Nobody was willing to trade for Mathis & nobody seems willing to sign him either. NFL personnel evaluators know way more than any of us about what these guys have left & their lack of action in signing Mathis to a "bargain" of $5m a year speaks volumes. They're both washed up or d@mned close to it. That should be sorta obvious at this point.
falcndave
Quinn and company give "show me" contracts to guys like this. I suspect Long has offers (even from us) and is looking for more years/dollars/guaranteed money before he commits. He may be hoping a training camp injury adds to his value for some team. While the world sees him as an injury list, he hopes to market himself as a Pro Bowl tackle.
⚡Slumerican⚡
TD wants to sit on the money in case our out classed lineman has to over compensate to try to keep Ryan alive so he can pick up more scrub lineman late in the season when ours go down. Instead of spending money upfront and building a decent line. I hope none of our guys get injured, but it makes you wonder if we are asking to much of who we've got and they are trying to do more than their abilities allow and end up injured. JayOzOne
If we don't sign either, it's because the coach (that everybody believes has this team on the right path) doesn't think we need them. I'm not convinced that our line is as horrible as a lot of you think. And if it is, then DQ believes that Long and Mathis aren't significantly better and worth the loot. Some want to blame TD, but Quinn clearly hasn't pushed him to make it happen. We will learn a lot more starting at 7:00 PM on Friday. likeriver
It almost makes TOO much sense though.Pretty much this. I know it's a new era and all, but it's just part of the Falcons heritage not to make a lot of sense. See, if we signed Mathis we might potentially win the Super Bowl, and that's a big no no....Hopefully the Falcons front office will remember who they are and sign some nobody from the Jaguars. kingslasher
Please no. We constantly sign and overpay these guys just as they fall off the age or injury cliff. Mathis is a shadow of his former self and Long can't be far behind.
FentayeJones
This literally could make the difference of winning it all or not .Now that's a stretch. Two players who in their prime never got their teams remotely close to a SB is supposed to be the difference in us winning one now that they are washed up? What if Hankerson, Clayborn, and/or Schofield show out this season and we want to sign any combination of them back in addition to Julio? Are we gonna do it with 15m?Not to mention any other FAs we may desire Edited August 9, 2015 by Five_Fifs

FalconFanSince1970
Julio won't even take up 15 mil in cap let alone 30+ mil try again. We only have $16.5M and he could take up all of that if Dimi front loads his contract.Maybe, but p!ssing away several million on washed up players ain't gonna help matters. When did Mathis get washed up. Five_Fifs
Considering Long and Mathis will get 1 or 2 year deals they won't exactly cripple the cap now will they? You forget the principle of the cap rollover. If we rollover spend 10m on those two guys this season, we only rollover 5 to next year....which leaves you trying to replace all our 1 year guys plus go shopping for new guysIt's called planning ahead. And not being impulsive. Edited August 9, 2015 by Five_Fifs

There is absolutely nothing stopping it from happening. The need to improve is there. The cap space os there. Yet, we haven't signed either of these guys. Neither has any other team in the NFL or CFL.

No. Will I cry if we don't? No.
