Sports World Report - Atlanta Falcons Rumors: Evan Mathis, Jake Long Signed After Jake Matthews, Joe Hawley Injuries

Recommended Posts

The Atlanta Falcons are clearly questioning the status of their offensive line heading into training camp. Over the past few seasons, injuries on the line have been the ultimate downfall for the team causing the run game and Matt Ryan to struggle heavily. This offseason got worse as players like Mike Johnson left and Lamar Holmes and Joe Hawley prepare to start the year still suffering from injuries. As a result, the Falcons are beginning to look at what is left on the free agent market.

According to ESPN.com, the Atlanta Falcons brought in former St. Louis Rams free agent tackle Jake Long for a workout. The former No.1 overall pick has been sitting on the market since the offseason with little interest in his talents. The Falcons need depth at the tackle position and could try and sign Long on a small contract to potentially get a big reward. Right now, the Falcons have Jake Matthews as the starter, but he is coming off an injury as well. Matthews appeared healthy in mini-camp, but the Falcons are hesitant to place their faith in the surgically repaired foot.

This is not the first player the Falcons have eyed on the market heading into training camp. According to NFL.com, the Falcons are a potential landing spot for Evan Mathis as the Pro Bowler awaits a contract from a team. Mathis was released by the Philadelphia Eagles after his contract demands caused him to hold out of offseason workouts. Mathis is a clear upgrade for any offensive line especially the Falcons. It is unclear exactly what kind of contract Mathis is demanding at the moment, but the Falcons have cap space to burn which could be used for the veteran.

The Falcons need to have a good offensive line this season or they could easily repeat the struggles of the past two years. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan told the media that he expects the run game to be a big focus of the offense in 2015. With Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman battling it out to start, the only way they have success is if the line is healthy and dominant. Right now it is very questionable that the Falcons have that kind of line in place.

I guess with Long a little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing.

That's basically what it boils down to for me. If we're going to have injury riddled depth as we already do, at least make it high quality injury riddled depth rather than washed-up-never-have-beens.

lets not forget Long has been highly injury prone the 2nd half of his career and isn't anything near the player he was earlier in his career

not sure he'd be that big of an upgrade at RT doubt they move Matthews to RT at this stage

Long would add depth and competition for the RT spot and LG spot

Mathis is a no brainier even at a high number its not like the falcons have all these bad contracts if mathis busted it would be the end and likely would only hurt the team signing a future free agent.

Mathis is a huge up grade and basically completes a good OL Matthews you have to think improves Mathis at LG Hawley while not a world beater is more than serviceable same with Asmoah and schreader made huge gains last year all 5 guys would be more athletic guys that big bruisers

man people are not patent enough with OLmen it takes them time to develop because hawley are schreader struggled early in there careers and looked at as stop gaps does mean they couldn't develop and wouldn't be all that shocked if Konz to into something now that he's in a zone scheme were he best fits.

if they sign someone or not they should be improved but still a work in progress

I really hope we sign Mathis and he turns out to be an elite player.

People complain about his age but there's no reason to think he's going to be significantly worse than before. He's old but no high mileage. And all indications say he's healthy and still an excellent player. I'm worried Dimi's afraid of getting bit with another big contract, but then again maybe he shouldn't sign players like Tyson Jackson to big deals when there's no reason to think they'll be good. There's no reason to think Mathis will be bad so Dimi should go for it.

Hey Mods...guys I am gonna throw in my two cents worth ok. This thread is based on an article that is, at best, deceptive. I don't think the OP intentionally posted it for that reason in order to be deceptive himself? But I do think the OP might want to be more careful in the future. As it is...lots of folks have not seen this thread yet and really they shouldn't. There is -nothing- in the posted article that is new or informative beyond what we have already seen on these boards. And so...if I might make a suggestion? Delete this thread, so we can get back to the business of talking Falcons football. Thanks for your time fellas :).

I understand that you're upset. Point noted.

But to the rest, at no time did I give false information. That is the title to the article. If y'all feel it's a click bait, my bad.

Nah man. That was just my response, you know I didn't take it like that. The dog was a cute touch tho...no?

Definitely. Absolutely tops in my opinion. One of the best posters here and that's not even close to a stretch.
