Devonta Freeman

Recommended Posts

People on here are underrating Coleman like crazy. I was praying for this guy in the 2nd and we got him in the 3rd. You don't run for 2000+ yards(4th fastest to 2000 in college history) just by speed. His vision looks pretty good to me on film for those on here questioning it. Freeman just doesn't jump out to me...he's small and he's not a guy that will ever break a big run. I think he can be a solid #2. Coleman if he stays healthy will be a top 5 back in this league sooner rather than later. Mark that down.

he had a 34yd TD run against NO last yr

LOL...I'm trying to figure out what his statement has to do with Freeman. LOL!!!

Nothing. Maybe size and speed but Emmit would run you over too. Got stronger as the game wore on. Players like Emmit shouldn't even be mentioned in threads like these when comparing two unknowns and yes, Freeman is virtually an unknown too.

Exactly. Based on that we have all future HoFers on the team.

While you are correct I don't have any inside information, I do know our starting RB this year is going to have to understand pass protections and thats where I know Freeman will have a big edge on the rook. Freeman will also be ahead in the passing game as far as being a receiver.

Many fans simply do not understand how important it is for a starting RB to be able to pass protect if you are going to be on the field any significant amount of time, but coaches do place a high importance level on this.

I know here at TATF if you say you think one guy is starting over another you must love one and hate the other, but I think these two guys are going to be great complements to each other. Freemans a little better with a quick lateral juke to explode through the hole, Coleman has a burst that is second to none straight line.

Rook RBs get on the field and get starter reps almost every year in the NFL - it is not uncommon. I agree that Freeman has some built-in advantages that you eloquently highlighted - but it is far from settled who will start. The job is 100% up in the air and may the best man win.

If Coleman shows that he can catch, block, hit another gear, and hang on to the football....he'll start.

Gonna be a lot of people angry when they finally choose the starter for week 1, both ways lol. Of course since Coleman is the new guy I want him to ball out, and I've loved his confidence this year *kid was the only rookie who said he should be a 92 in Madden lol*

I like Freeman, I'm kinda like KOG where I don't see his big time attribute though...he's not top 5 strongest, fastest, catching, etc...he's pretty good at all those things though so maybe that will be enough to work for him. I don't know, I miss old school Turner dragging LBs on his back for x amount of yards, or Jerious Norwood cutting at 60 degree angles without losing any speed...guys who you know bring something to the table that only 3 or 4 other guys in the league can even attempt.

I want to be clear about my position on Freeman.

I know for a fact that he was barely a traffic cone in blitz pick-up last year.

Coaches said he improved as the year went along? I didn't see him on the field very often in situations where he would have to pick up a blitz.

Teammates said he worked harder than anyone else to improve on every aspect of his play? I don't often see teammates say anything else about a player.

Certainly, it is possible for Freeman's blocking to improve. I just don't feel like Matt Ryan's continued health is worth gambling on that.

I have no idea if Coleman can pick up a blitz or not.

I believe we will miss Jaquizz Rodgers' versatility: his unspectacular steadiness and uninspiring reliability.

I don't care who lines up as the starting RB as long as they are effective, do not limit offensive play calling, and do not allow Matt Ryan to be blasted. I don't care if it's Freeman, Coleman, Smith, or Bear Freaking Pascoe lined up back there, as long as they get the job done in all three phases of the position's responsibilities: running, catching, and blocking.

emmit smith wasnt the tallest or fastest or quickest yet still one of the best RBs of all time.

One out of a lot...

If we're gonna build our team in extremities we should pick up a QB in the 6th and start him over Ryan next year. Worked out for Brady.
