Florida State, Alabama will open 2017 season at new Falcons stadium

The Falcons will be moving into a new home for the 2017 season and they’ll get some help from the college ranks breaking in their new digs.

Alabama and Florida State will play the first college football game at the new stadium on September 2 when they face off in the 10th Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game. It will be the fifth appearance for the Crimson Tide in the game — they’re 4-0 in their previous appearances — and Florida State’s first time opening the season under the banner of the chicken sandwich concern.

“The game with Alabama will be one of the highlights of the college football season,” Florida State Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox said in a statement. “Both schools have significant alumni bases in Atlanta, and we would expect the media coverage of the game to be on par with some of the biggest non-conference games in recent history. The exposure for our University and our athletics program will be invaluable. We look forward to the game and playing in a fantastic venue.”

There’s no NFL schedule for the 2017 season at this point, but it’s a good bet that the season will open on September 7, the first Thursday after Labor Day, at the home of the Super Bowl champions. Unless that’s the Falcons, their first regular-season game at their new stadium could come on September 10 or 11.

Didn't see this posted and thought it was interesting, not much going on anyway. Something to talk about!

Wonder if we can get tickets for the Bama/FSU kickoff game now.

I think the first NFL game will be on Sept. 11th.

Should be a pretty wild game. I would love to try and go and not even because I am a huge Noles fan. That just sounds awesome to me.

Also I think the MLS team will play there all summer for those who want to get a glimpse of the stadium before football season.

MLS...College Football... College Basketball playoffs.... and Concerts.... This place is gonna rock....

Personally, if I was a Georgia resident I'd be somewhat irritated that it isn't a Georgia team, either U. of Georgia or Georgia Tech, if not the Atlanta Falcons themselves, who gets the distinction of being one of the teams to inaugurate New Atlanta Stadium (or whatever it'll be called by 2017.) Instead, two "outsider" teams will get the honors.

Thread title is wrong. A Georgia team will be opening the stadium - Atlanta United FC. MLS will have been playing there for months (since March). Those two colleges will open their seasons, but that will not be the inaugural stadium event.

I'm going to take a wild guess here, that if the Falcons are still doing Friday Night Lights, that year the game would take place at the new stadium, even though the stadium should have had an open house even before the United FC play there.

Falcons 1st preseason game at home will be played before the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game....

I almost wish they'd go play their preseason games in Athens or Bobby Dodd or something (or why not 1 each) and not kickoff in the new stadium till it was in earnest, so it'd feel more special that way.. They'll need the preseason games though to work out the kinks both on and off the field I guess.
