rounz
Interesting, and most of the metrics fall about where I would expect for us.I just read the first two articles, and the second one answered my question about whether it was just number of injuries or quality (significance) of injuries. But i don't think lack of modern sports science can be used as a factor for us.Aren't we usually on the cutting edge? Falcanuck
They were also key injuries
JayOzOne
There were bettors who bet against us in 2012 & 2013 because they felt that we skated the three previous years with relatively few significant injuries and the law of averages suggested that the bug would catch up to us. I'm inclined to believe that the pendulum should be swinging back in our favor after the devastation of the last two seasons (especially among the offensive line). JayOzOne
Anybody else notice that there's little correlation between total injuries and quality of performance? It's more about WHO gets hurt than it is about how many.
ballfan
somewhat correlates to age (it would be more interesting to look at age by position):http://bloggingthebeast.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/NFL-age.png

FalconFanSince1970
Before you say this explains why we went 10-22, notice SD was more injured and went 18-14. IND was too. They went 22-10. Speaks more to our depth, or lack thereof. I'm not even gonna say the D name.
NZFalcon
wtf did the packers do? from 31st to 3rd. We should copy whatever they did
Osiruz
The players the chargers and Indiana lost were not as important.
FalconFanSince1970
The players the chargers and Indiana lost were not as important.IND and SD lost important players. That ain't the point. The point is they replaced them with players with enough quality to help them win games. We didn't.
Osiruz
Who did they lose?
FalconFanSince1970
Who did they lose?Who did we lose? Spoon, Brawley, Sackmaker and WillyMo? Who did we replace em with?I'd venture to say Robert Mathis was a bigger loss than any of those players.

FalconFanSince1970
How about julio, roddy, and Steven jackson?LMAO at Steven Jackson. Roddy only missed five games those two years. Our winning% was actually higher without Julio than with him in 2013. Even with Roddy and Julio missing seventeen games the last two years, we ranked 5th and 7th in passing yards. I would say the problems were on the Oline and in the front seven. We basically replaced those players with Dimi duds.

FalconFanSince1970
But the draft picks would have been all-pros, right? Make sure to argue both sides. The draft picks didn't need to be all pros. Just adequate subs. Not UDFAs like Worrilow, Bartu or Stone. Or draft busts like Jelly, Puddin, King Konz, Reynolds Wrap, Dead President, Mass Exodus and Akeem The Dream Dent. MAD597
I told you guys injures were our biggest issues the last two years. I like our new coaches but if we would have stayed healthy we would have made the playoffs the last two years and Smith would still be here. The injuries exposed weaknesses in our roster and coaches. etherdome
Great post. This chart pretty much verifies what we all suspected. Injuries, more than anything (or anyone) has held this franchise down. The sad part is that Smitty lost his job and Matt has lost some of his prime years in the aftermath. No point in complaining about it. Let's hope the team goes on a healthy streak for a few seasons. Grrrillapmpn Inc.®
Refuse to use injuries as an excuse, every team deals with injuries. The problem was depth, or lack thereof.
