Plenty Of Memorable Plays For Atlanta Falcons Receiver Julio Jones

Recommended Posts

ESPN.com reporters David Newton, Pat Yasinskas, and Mike Triplett all gave Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones his due respect when asked in a roundtable discussion over whether Jones was the most dangerous playmaker in the division.

Jones, arguably the most feared deep threat in the league, is intent on building off last season's record-setting performance, as he established a new franchise mark with 1,593 receiving yards.

In four seasons, Jones has left Falcons fans on edge with numerous jaw-dropping plays. Here are five we believe top them all, but feel free to disagree.

1. After further review, it's a catch vs. Indianapolis, Nov. 6, 2011: In the most explosive game of his rookie season, Jones stretched his body to corral a 50-yard touchdown while surrounded by three defenders. The Colts thought the ball touched the ground, but a replay review confirmed just how outstanding the catch really was. Jones followed with an 80-yard catch-and-run score, accounting for his first two career touchdowns.

2. Championship-caliber play vs. San Francisco, Jan. 20, 2013: In the NFC Championship Game of the 2012 season, Jones sent the Georgia Dome crowd into a frenzy with his tip-toeing, second-quarter touchdown grab while being smothered by 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown. Jones used his size, strength, and athleticism to ward off Brown's defense. And Jones gave the Falcons a 17-0 lead at the time, a lead they eventually squandered in a devastating 28-24 loss.

3. One-handed catch vs. New York Jets, Oct. 7, 2013: Jones, sprinting down the left sideline and flanked by cornerback Antonio Cromartie, got a few steps ahead, extended his left arm and made a falling, one-handed catch in front of Cromartie for a 46-yard gain. Jones didn't appear to trash talk the always mouthy Cromartie, but the intense stare Jones gave spoke volumes. This was the same Week 5 game during which Jones suffered a season-ending foot fracture.

4. An 81-yard, catch-and-run touchdown vs. St. Louis Rams, Sept. 15, 2013: Jones established a career-long play when he caught a Matt Ryan pass in stride at his own 44-yard line, and then sprinted 56 more yards for the score. Jones shook off cornerback Janoris Jenkins' futile attempt to take out his legs. The longest pass completion in Falcons history, by the way, is a 98-yard touchdown hookup between Bobby Hebert and Michael Haynes (1993).

5. Acrobatic, 40-yard score vs. Tampa Bay, Sept. 18, 2014: Jones used his blazing speed to get four or five steps ahead of Bucs cornerback Alterraun Verner, then Jones contorted his body to make a breathtaking, over-the-shoulder grab while falling into the end zone. It happened on a night everything went right for the Falcons in a 56-14 blowout victory.

In the Giants game this year, he caught that one slant pass; one handed, and the ball was a good foot or two behind him. Looked like it was going to be picked for sure and he just gecko-grabbed the ball out of the air. It didn't go for a lot of yards but man that catch just made me shake my head. Would have been an INT for sure too.

worth every draft pick we gave up to get him. Anyone who does not think so can GTFO!

We went 3-2 in those games Dawg. 10-22 in the last two seasons. With Julio.

Why? Because the rest of our team was flawed.

We probably went 5-0 in Michael Jenkins' five most memorable play games. Because we had better teams.

Those five picks would have made us better. A mocker focker like you should know this.

I'll never forget that NFC Championship game...

Check the game, we're up by 17, get on my flight, land, get a ton of texts from concerned friends sending their condolences

Still have a hard time believing we let that one slip away

we gave up two picks in the 20's, a 2nd rounder and two 4th rounders. how many of those do you think we would have hit on FFS1970? Don't go back and pick out all the all-pro's in the drafts either. Dimitroff already admitted a week after the draft that the first 1st round pick would have been Gabe Carimi.

Your analysis is flawed because it leaves no room for drafting busts with those 5 picks - AT BEST, we probably end up with 3 starters, no superstars and two busts.

Falcons would not have been better if we did not do that trade - it is a lie that you have convinced yourself otherwise. We weren't taking Justin Houston in 1st round - and, in spite of TD's revisionist history, doubt we would have taken him in 2nd round either.

nostalgic lookback on day of the trade - nfl.com article

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff invested much of his 2011 and 2012 drafts in a bold draft-day trade that brought Alabama receiver Julio Jones to Atlanta.

The Falcons selected Jones with the sixth overall pick, acquired from the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night for a package of five draft picks, including Atlanta's No. 27 overall selection in the first round this year and the team's first-round pick in 2012.

The Browns also acquired the Falcons' second- and fourth-round picks this year and fourth-round selections in 2012.

The Falcons will pair the physical Jones with their Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White, giving quarterbackMatt Ryan another top target.

"We knew it was going to be an aggressive move and cost us," Dimitroff said. "As an organization we felt very strongly about the move for a player who truly adds the explosive, urgent athleticism we're looking for to improve on this team."

Jones said he was "very shocked" the Falconsmade such a big investment to select him in the draft.

"It took me by surprise," Jones said. "I feel like they have a lot of trust in me. I'm not going to disappoint."

Due to the ongoing labor unrest, teams were prevented from including current players in draft-day trades. Dimitroff had the difficult task of using only draft picks to trade up from the No. 27 spot.

"You had to really drill down and become that much more focused on how you're going to put together the compensation package," he said. "It took a lot more conversation that it would have if you had players you could discuss."

Dimitroff said he is confident he has enough depth to overcome losing so many draft picks.

"Our feeling on this again was where we are in the draft, where we are with our team, where we are with our roster, we are still very young," he said. "We have a lot of players we have drafted in the last few years in the middle rounds who are still coming into their own and still developing.

"We felt we needed to make a bold statement as far as an impact-type player and possibly obviously give up some of the picks in the middle rounds. We have a lot of players that satisfy our needs as backups and strong depth players right now so we wanted to go after a guy who would be a serious impact-type player."

Dimitroff said he ranked Jones (6-4, 220) and Georgia's A.J. Green similarly high and would have been happy with either receiver.

The Bengals took Green with the fourth pick.

Many draft experts expected theFalcons to use their first-round pick for a defensive end.

Atlanta tied for 20th in the league with only 31 sacks last season. The team's top pass-rusher, John Abraham, had 13 sacks last season, but he will be 33 next season.

"In my mind the explosiveness we feel we're going to get from Julio outweighed what we felt we were going to get on defense in the first round," Dimitroff said.

Jones entered the draft after leading Alabama with 78 catches for 1,133 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior. He had 179 receptions for 2,653 yards and 15 touchdowns in three seasons while starting in each of his 40 games.

Jones is regarded as a strong blocker, a strength which had Falcons coach Mike Smith smiling on Thursday night.

"Our wide receivers are going to block and Julio fits that mold," Smith said. "That's one of the skills we really look at.

"Julio is a big, explosive wide receiver who is going to add to the explosiveness of our team. It's something in the offseason as we've been studying, we know we need to be more explosive and it's going to be a very competitive group now at wide receiver."

Jones, from Foley, Ala., said he didn't suffer a personal loss in the storms which tore through his home state on Wednesday. One of the cities hit hard was Tuscaloosa, the home of the University of Alabama.

"I'm going to do what I can to give back to Tuscaloosa because they've been there for me from the start," Jones said, adding "I prayed about it when I heard the news yesterday."

This marks the third time in eight years the Falcons have used a first-round pick on a wide receiver, followingMichael Jenkins in 2004 and White in 2005.

Jenkins, at No. 28, and White, at No. 27, were late first-round picks. Jones is the Falcons' highest pick since the team selected Ryan No. 3 overall in the 2008 draft, Dimitroff's first as general manager.

The Falcons still have picks in the third, fifth and sixth rounds, plus three seventh-round selections, in this draft.

Please Heavenly Father, let us re-sign him.

He has the potential to be one of the best ever. Don't give him the Deion Sanders treatment and let him go in his prime. Give him a blank check and keep him in GA.

Julio will be re-signed.

Arthur Blank would have NEVER let Deion Sanders get out of the A-T-L. The Smiths(aka "The Clampetts") were idiots.

If we can't hit on two firsts, a second and two fourths somebody needs to be fired. Even Dimi can hit on that bro. I mean he drafted:

1. Trufant

1. Spoon

2. WillyMo

4. Freeman

4. Hawley

That's a better haul than one injury prone WR who helped us to a 33-31 record, after a 33-15 record the previous three years with Michael Jenkins. Even I mocked:

1. Justin Houston

1. Kevin Zeitler

2. DeMarco Murray

4. Virgil Green

4. Brandon Boykin

We would hve been better. Dimi had so many options bro. Justin Houston, DeMarco Murray, Kevin Zeitler, Justin Thomas, Brandon Boykin, Muhammad Wilkerson, Cameron Jordan, Alshon Jeffrey, Richard Sherman, Jimmy Smith, Jabaal Sheard, Kyle Rudolph, Torrey Smith, Randall Cobb, David DeCastro, Coby Fleenor, Jurrell Casey and more. Even he could have hit.
