Grady Jarrett: Not A 1-Tech Nt

Recommended Posts

There seems to be a sizeable contingent on this board that is still under the assumption that Jarrett is our Nose Tackle of the future, similar to Brandon Mebane of Seattle. Dan Quinn cleared it up once again how wrong that assumption is:

Knox Bardeen @knoxbardeen

Dan Quinn said #Falcons want to feature rookie Grady Jarrett in their nickel package & utilize his quickness & agility at DT.

Jeanna @jeannathomas

Says Grady Jarrett has unique quickness. Will feature in nickel package. Compared him to Babs.

DQ praised Grady Jarrett's athleticism and quickness. Said he'll be used in a similar role as Babineaux.

Soliai is our NT/1-tech. As I've been saying for a while now, Jarrett's role is as a backup 3-tech and nickel DT pass rusher.

Some other interesting recent tweets:

Former Seahawk O'Brien Schofield said Atlanta's defensive scheme is the same as Seattle's when Quinn was the DC. No major changes.

I would say with three days of minicamp with the first team Ricardo Allen goes into training camp as the starting FS unless Kemal changes it

Also from yesterday, noticed Jalen Collins got extensive time covering in the slot. Didn't do anything outstanding but seems eager.

Guys I thought looked impressive yesterday were, of course, Ricardo Allen, along with Ra'Shede Hageman, Vic Beasley and Chris Chester.

Interesting note: Adrian Clayborn said he couldn't remember one time when Dan Quinn mentioned the #Seahawks. It's all about the #Falcons now

William Moore says 100% of the film he has been watching has been Seattle

It seems obvious to all of us that have posted in this thread thus far. But there have actually been a lot of posters claiming Jarrett is our NT of the future; a lot of it has come from people's roster projections.

There is a certain poster that we went 'round and 'round about this, but I'm not going to call out names at this time.

I think one of the more important other tweets I included was the one about Schofield saying our scheme is pretty much the same as the Seattle scheme. How different or similar our scheme was going to be to Seattle's is something I've been extremely curoius to know. I always figured it would be pretty much the same thing, but you never know until you actually know, lol.

Best pick of the draft imo..You guys are gonna think Grady Jarret was the 1st rd pick by mid season.(nothing against Vic) Bank on it. Ive watched a lot of Clemson games over the last few years.(I became a fan when Deandre Nuuuuuuuk Hopkins signed there), and Grady always stood out.

I think Grady has a great future here in ATL, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves yet. I have concerns over how much playing time he will even be able to get right now. With Soliai and Hageman starting in the base D, and Babs and Clayborn expected to be the nickel DT pass rushers, Grady might have a hard time getting on the field this year. You can only have 45 active players on game day, so there is a good chance Grady wont even be active a lot of the games. Injuries will get him on the field some. And it's probably Babs last year, so 2016 looks like the year we'll see Jarrett explode.

For Jarrett to see a lot of snaps this year, that probably means us having to cut Babs.

I'm with these guys. Wasn't the reason he dropped is because he was undersized for a DT? Who would want an undersized NT when it seems like size is the most important thing for a NT?

I think that Grady Jarrett would beast at 3-tech DT, but he has the versatility to play 1-tech NT as well and has done it a bit at Clemson.

You don't have to be huge to be a 1-tech NT, just disruptive enough to draw double-teams. The Seahawks' starting 1-tech NT Brandon Mebane is just 6'1 310lbs.

He can play both 3-tech and 1-tech, which makes him a good matchup interior defender.

With his experience inside at nose, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some reps there

See what I mean? Even after posting comments from the head coach proving otherwise, people still want to believe a faulty assumption.

First of all, Mebane isn't 310, he's 330 - per Dan Quinn himself. Second of all, Jarrett's experience at NT was as lining up for Clemson in strictly a 1-gap scheme - meaning little to no double teams. The 1-tech NT in the Falcons scheme is a 2-gap role and nearly 100% of the time is taking on double teams, so it's a completely different animal. You can't just say becuase Jarrett lined up at NT in one scheme, that he can line up at NT in a different scheme. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Let Quinn's own words finally sink in:

Mebane isn't 330, he is actually 311.

It says that Quinn wants to feature Jarrett in the nickel package. That is because Jarrett has interior rush ability. Both DTs in most teams nickel packages are usually penetrating, so it doesn't really matter.

Doesn't say whether he will play 3-tech or 1-tech if he is used in other packages.

Jarrett plays the run really well and has rushing ability, which allows him to play both 3 and 1 tech positions.

To be clear, I'm not saying if Jarrett will play 3-tech or 1-tech. I'm just saying that he has the ability to play both well and could see time at both because he can rush and play the run so well.

Dan Freaking Quinn personally said Mebane is 330 lbs. I can't make it any more simple than that.

But this is still beside the point, since Quinn has already flat out said they are featuring Grady in the nickel defense as an interior pass rusher.

I think the only 1 tech's right now are Soliai, Mbu and Havili-Heimuli. Some other guys can rotate, but we might not even use a 1 tech in sub, which is 60% of the time.

Yep, you're correct. And my suspicion is Soliai is the only one of those that make the 53 man roster. I could see Mbu or Heimuli being put on the practice squad though, in case Soliai gets injured.
