Seems like Quinn had Southward earmarked to play press corner from day one. I don't think he was ever in the running to play FS. Maybe he was never cut out to be a NFL FS and corner is his natural position. We have seen several players on defense moved around so far.

Besides, Ricardo Allen has seemed to come out of nowhere as the favorite at FS. To me, thats the biggest surprise so far.

An atrocious draft decision at the time that seems consistent with TD's 3rd round gaffes prior to this year. Hoping the current staff can salvage him as a solid corner on the depth chart.

Drafted as a free safety but moved to corner when Charles Godfrey is our projected starter? Not good.

Most draft boards had Dez as a 5th-6th round special teams guy, but Falcons brass knew better.

TD justifiably catches heck for these

gaffes, but Who the heck are this team's scouts?

Personally, I don't think Southward makes it beyond 3 years as a Falcon. I don't see it with him. He's decent but we'll see. My expectations are very low for him.

At this point, he's young, fast, athletic, good size and serviceable. He has a good defensive minded HC. All that said, 3 yrs or less with the team (or even in the league) isn't that far fetched.

He'll stick for a while on special teams abilities alone I think. He's got an outside shot to contribute on defense but considering who's in front of him at corner, who we just drafted, and it being a position change the decks are stacked against him. He could be very good depth and an integral part of the coverage unit.

Seems like we get burned looking for need in the 3rd round...Dent/Holmes/Dez.

Holmes might find a place, but Dez appears to be a misguided reach...not a safety option with plenty of cb on the roster.

yeah but.....it is not Dimitroff's fault - Smitty put a gun to TD's head and made him draft Akeem Dent, Lamar Holmes, Mike Johnson and Dez Southward in the 3rd round - dayum that Smitty!!!

Do you know that one way or the other? I don't. I heard the phrase "collaborative effort" a million times in those seven years.

just another guy with the athletic ability/measurables that has a head full of marbles? if so we should see kroy permanently moved to backup punter and that's it, right?

col·lab·o·rate (kə-lăb′ə-rāt′)

intr.v. col·lab·o·rat·ed, col·lab·o·rat·ing, col·lab·o·rates

1. To work together, especially in a joint intellectual effort.

It means exactly what I think it means, whether or not it's true, I don't know.

Smitty is gone...why not TD?

We could have brought in a 2nd HC to manage the clock...we brought in a crutch for the GM to take care of the lines-draft.

I don't see how MS's vision wasn't TD's vision.

Said in one of the FS posts that I wouldn't be surprised if Southy is cut before the season starts. He doesn't have the smarts/instincts for safety from what I've seen. At cb I just think he might be too far behind the others to crack the top 5 spots. Typical desperation reach by TD - only pick I disliked from last season tbh

I think he can carve out a role as a special teamer here.

Honestly you need a playmaker at FS, an X factor, and based on college stats alone, Southward can't make crucial plays for ****.I feel good about Ricardo Allen back there.

How do you know? He barely played.

23 tackles, a sack, an INT, and 2 pass deflections in very limited playing time. I'd say standing Jimmy Graham up at the goaline to allow Kemal to strip him was a crucial play.

Edit: Oh I see you were talking about his college stats.

When did you see this??

I'm not saying you're incorrect because it's your opinion, but what play (or plays) led you to your conclusion?
