Joey Mbu

One player to watch next week is UDFA nose tackle Joey Mbu. Bryan Cox singled him out as one of the better D-linemen during OTAs.

Joey Mbuicon-article-link.gif, projected to go as high as the fourth round, is an intriguing option at defensive tackle. The University of Houston product earned first-team All-American Athletic Conference honors by recording 32 tackles (4.5 for loss) and 2.5 sacks as a senior.

Viewed as a prototypical NT capable of playing in the 3-4 or 4-3 formation, Mbu could eventually aid the Falcons’ run defense. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 313 pounds, he certainly has the build coaches like from interior D-linemen. His 35-inch arms are the longest among DLs who attended the Combine.

If he's impressing as much as I keep hearing, I guess I better learn his name. Is it 'Em-Bu' or 'Ma-bu', or something entirely different?

you know, if you watched any of the vids OP posted, you would hear him pronouncing his own name. Seems you're not actually that interested tho ;)

No my internet is so bad at home I can't actually watch videos. Or I should say, I could but it would take about forty five minutes to watch the shortest one. If I don't have an answer by Monday I'll watch them and find out. lol

He's interesting with that big wide build. Notice in vids he's occupying 2 blockers usually while pushing the pocket. But more interesting is the way he's dis-engaging from blockers and has head on a swivel, moving towards ball. He's got good traits for a NT. might be a surprise

So does anyone know why he fell from a 4'th round grade to UDFA?

I can't find any arrests or red flags. But it's not uncommon for NT types or DTs in general to fall or fall out of the draft if other positions are deep. Which in this draft pass rushers, corners and receivers took up a lot of picks.

Look at Jarrett. We got him in what 5th? Rated as high as 2nd round I think at one time.

The other is IMO only that Mbu projects to be a decent two gap kind of NT/DT. A space clogger with some athleticism that can move the pocket. I don't see him as 34 DE full time. And most true 34 teams want a massive 340-350 beast. With more power. He had 21 bench presses.. A lot of 43 teams like nothing but smaller but stout guys as run stoppers. Our team, Seattle and Ajax are odd balls that run a 43 over that marries 34 and 43 concepts. Use multiple big guys in different ways. So a guy like Mbu might be a great rotation fit for us, but not good for other teams

Btw I don't see anything calling him a 4th rounder. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/profiles/joey-mbu?id=2552284

He's a good risk. Big, good frame to get stronger, big lower body.

Glad to see he is doing well. I had settled on him as final spot on DL a while back.

LEO-Beasley, Biermann

RDT-Hageman, Babinaux

LDT-Soliai, Jarrett, Mbu

LDE-Clayborn, Jackson

SLB-Reed, Schofield

Writing is on the wall for Maponga, Goodman, Starr, and maybe even Matthews who I sometimes include but deducted when researching the number of DL Quinn has had to work with last two years. Matthews was the third guy mentioned, "improving".

Goodman hasn't done much up to this point, but to be fair he's been used wrong also. I think Quinn will make him productive.
