who is "The Duke"?

besides John Wayne

" The NFL first used a ball in honor of Wellington Mara called "The Duke" in 1941 at the suggestion of George Halas, as Tim Mara (Wellington's father) had helped him arrange for Wilson Sporting Goods Co. to become the league's official supplier of game balls."

Isn't that Goodell's nickname?

EDIT: just Googled, and it was Wellington Mara's nickname. But because he is a huge Duke fan, I'm pretty sure I've heard Goodell also called "Duke".

Thanks J.

I knew John Wayne played some college ball but I didn't think he had anything to do with the NFL.

Not sure how I feel about Goodell's name on the ball.

He gets paid enough. He should leave the glory to the players.

The commissioner's name has always been on footballs and basketballs as far as I know, in every pro league. Baseballs too, I think, but I'm not entirely sure.

What's funny is I was in the back row of the lower level and the ball hit some guy walking out of the tunnel with his hands full of food right in the stomach and then rolled under my seat right to me.

he deserves props if he didnt drop his food lol Edited by Groovy
