Just Had A Debate At Work...

I live in Western NY, so of course there are mostly Bills fans that work here.

I was educating them on our new head coach Dan Quinn. Of course no one here new who he was and I explained how he was the defensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks whom lead the league in total defense the last 2 seasons.

Immediately one of the Bills fans said, "NO WAY! The Bills had the best defense last season!"

I asked if that was his opinion and he said no it is a fact.

Then of course the debate started about what makes a defense the best.

I said according to NFL.com, the Seahawks allowed the fewest yards and points over the last 2 seasons. Yes, you can argue that the Bills offense was so bad that their defense was on the field longer, but the ultimate goal is to score more points than the other team (resulting in a WIN). When your defense allows the least PPG, it only makes sense that they should be considered the best defense.

Thoughts?

To me, points allowed is the best barometer or measurement for a defense, next is yards allowed, and then turnovers. What else is there really?

Let's say your defense allowed the fewest yards but gave up the most points, who cares? Points has to be the number one concern.

Last years numbers:

Buffalo vs. Seattle

PPG: 4th (18.1) vs. 1st (15.9)

YPG: 4th (312.2) vs. 1st (267.1)

INTs: 6th (19) vs. T-18 (13)

FFs: 17th (13) vs. T-11 (14)

Sacks: 1st (54) vs. 20th (37)

and then look at their offense:

PPG: 18th (21.4) vs. 10th (24.6)

YPG: 26th (318.5) vs. 9th (375.8)

INTs: 13th (13) vs. 3rd (7)

Fumbles: T-16 (10) vs. T-6 (7)

1st downs: 28th (273) vs. 14th (328)

could definitely make that case for Buffalo's offense causing a lot of the issues (yards/ppg)

No doubt Buffalo had a great defense last year.

Funniest thing was this guy making the comment, "Well, they (Seattle) didn't win the Super Bowl last year."

Of course I had to call him out that if he wants to base his defense on wins, he just killed his argument about Buffalo's defense.

Sacks and INTs are a pretty stat

Points we've all said it before...scoreboard

While limiting yardage is nice it is not the end result. Fortunately for us our HC was #1 in both categories last season!

Yeah..it was all HIM, the players and the head coach might not well have even bothered showing up.rolleyes.gif

I need to not ever log out, so I don't have to see this guy's incredibly ridiculous posts. I won't be making this mistake again.

Thank you ignore button...don't ever leave me.laugh.png

Bills have had better defensive players. Ya gotta wait and see what Rexie's gonna do with 'em. He's a great defensive guy, so we'll see. I'd say Quinn, in his shorter NFL career has shown to be Rexie's equal though. I just wanna see how he can do as a head coach before I pass any judgements.

That is a fair assessment, but how do YOU personally measure the best defensive team in the league?

That doesn't make any sense. Education has nothing to do with opinions. you know the saying...opinions are like ********......

An informed opinion is based on knowledge of the facts and carefully considered principles. It relies on evidence instead of limited personal experience.
