Dez Southward Undergoes Knee Surgery

Recommended Posts

Someone else will have to fill you in. I know he's been dealing with it for at least several days, but I have no idea how far back this injury goes. Thankfully it doesn't appear to be serious

Like some of the other posters already stated it sounds like a knee scope, maybe he's getting it drained. Can't find anything saying it's serious.

Falcons CB Dezmen Southward underwent knee surgery on Wednesday.

It's likely a clean-up procedure after Southward was limited by a knee issue in OTAs. Southward will miss valuable practice reps as he attempts to transition to corner. His status for training camp is questionable.

Not too worried. All he's missing right now is getting used to the pace. If he misses any TC time, then I'll worry. I didn't expect him to be more than a #4 CB out the gate for now anyway. Trufant, Collins and Alford will be the top corners. Should be at least

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Dezmen Southward underwent minor knee surgery Wednesday with the expectation of being back healthy for training camp, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

Southward stood on the sideline during the first day of organized team activities Tuesday. Afterward, coach Dan Quinn said Southward's inactivity had to do with a knee injury. Southward had issues with his left knee last preseason and missed some practice time. It's unclear if Wednesday's surgery was on the same knee.

Quinn converted Southward from free safety to cornerback, hoping to take advantage of the second-year player' size (6-1, 210), length and speed on the outside. But this is the second setback this offseason for Southward, who also underwent wrist surgery to correct a problem that dated back to his college days at Wisconsin.

With Southward likely sidelined for the offseason, the Falcons will proceed shorthanded at cornerback. Rookie second-round pick Jalen Collins has not practiced since joining the team after undergoing right foot surgery prior to the draft.

The Falcons still has two healthy starting cornerback in Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford. Once Collins enters the mix, the first-round talent could push Alford into a nickelback role, a role Alford said he would be willing to accept for the good of the team. Newcomer Phillip Adams played the nickelback role during Tuesday's OTAs. The Falcons also hope to get something out of seventh-round draft pick Akeem King.

For the last few days I've seen quite a few comments about the solid depth of our cornerback unit. Are we really that deep?

Tru - looked beastly in his first two seasons. Should get even better. Best corner Dimi's ever drafted

Alf - got lit up in the games he started. Too many penalties and TDs allowed. Not a prototypical Quinn corner

Collins - prototypical Quinn corner but battling injury, inexperience and rookie learning curve

Adams - I think he will be a pleasant surprise and log many snaps at nickel or dime

Southward - converted corner due to size and measurables. Battling injury and steep learning curve

White - UDFA with some promise. Have to wonder why he went undrafted though. Could move up if someone above falters

Lot of youth, inexperience, performance and health issues with this group. I'm not feeling as warm or fuzzy as many of the blind loyalists here.

I think our starting unit will be pretty nice. After that it is kind of up in the air. I am becoming a big fan of White's. He has a lot of potential.

Dude I pray to the football gods that we end up with a solid cornerback unit. The last thing we need is another Dimi bust corner. Lots of question marks and cause for concern though. It would be awful if we've finally fixed the pass rush only to find out our corners can't cover or stay out of the penalty box.

You forgot Akeem King

Basically, best corners this team has ever had. I see talent all across the board
