Redskins Releasing Veteran G Chris Chester

Recommended Posts

Dont know much about him but it seems he was brought to the Redskins by the Shannahan's so he would fit scheme wise.

Thoughts?

ESPNs Adam Caplan, citing a league source, reports that the Redskins are releasing veteran G Chris Chester on Wednesday.

Chester, 32, has one year remaining on his five-year, $20 million contract that included $6.5 million guaranteed. He would have made a base salary of $3.5 million for the 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Chester will free up $4 million in available cap space while creating $800,000 in dead money.

In 2014, Chester appeared in all 16 games for the Redskins. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 33 guard out of 78 qualifying players.

signing Polumbus over Barksdale says to me that Shanahan values familiarity of his system over talent level - which makes sense on some level. So, with Chester working under Shanahan for several years, I could see Chester coming in - if he still has gas left in the tank.

Solid Veteran stop gap for us seems like a obvious move to make...

Best case he's the starting LG and gives us a year to figure out a long term solution there

Worst case he's a solid vet guard for both the RG/LG position if someone goes down

Bring him in to compete. We need all the bodies we can get on our OL. Hoping Shanny has already started lobbying for him.

Redskins released RG Chris Chester.

Chester, 32, has started all 64 games for Washington the past four seasons, but isn't a fit for coach Jay Gruden's power-blocking scheme at just 305 pounds. The veteran remained a serviceable guard last season, especially in pass protection, so he should get another look. The Redskins save $4 million against the cap with the move. Spencer Long is now the favorite at right guard.

While I'm not thrilled bringing in a 32year old especially when I wanna see some youth injection, I'm all for this signing if for nothing other than competition and helping to teach the system to the young guys

This year's draft means we can really invest in the Oline long term in the next draft. If we give this guy a contract like Polumbus got, I am fully on board. vets with familiarity with the system can be a big help as we transition.
