Who Starts At Fs?

Recommended Posts

Is it Godfrey & Moore? Ish & Moore...? Kemal Ishmael showed promise last season. He has definitely played above his draft spot. However, I have always seen him as a SS.

Godfrey was a beast in Carolina, but that was a while ago. He is still only 29, so there could be something left in the tank for a season or two. Why did the Panthers cut him?

Kemal Ishmael looked fantastic at times. He's a ball hawk who can create turnovers. He's been my pick for starting FS since the end of last year.

Ishmael impressed me too. He made a coupl of interceptions of tipped balls from his teammates. Having the ability to make that kind of play is a great asset to have in the secondary.

I think you guys need to go watch the TDs Ish gave up to Tate and Nelson. Scary ugly. If he doesn't improve on those kind of plays he doesn't need to come anywhere near the FS position. He needs to stay at SS.

yep...truth!! BUT IF Ish comes in OTAs/TC havin' dropped weight that'll be a clue to what he's going after IMO. i just don't think he has the natural range to be a FS. curious to see how Quinn finally shapes his roster....

Only thing is, Cover 3 pretty much covers a lot of issues. Not all though.

After the training camp dust settles and some combination of Southward, Collins, King, and Adams prove that they can handle the RCB and Nickel Back duties, my money is still on Alford being our opening day FS.

If Alford is forced to stay at CB because nobody else steps up, we're pretty much screwed with Godfrey having to start. Ishmael is best suited as the future injury replacement for Willy-Mo at SS at some point during the season.

Ishmael is an ss, he is has an inability to cover deep and is too slow. I'm going with Godfrey.

Sure speed is great but a safeties ability to read the play is much more important. This is basically Southys weakness and why he is being moved to corner which is infinitely easier to play than safety in cover 3. Like many of the guys on our roster who would struggle in a stock 4-3 (undersized pass rushers, run stopping DEs, undersized olb's etc) a FS with good reads and instincts should be able to play FS on a cover 3 defence. I like Ish for the spot if Moore is ok to go

We're in trouble then. Deep trouble. If Charles Godfrey is anything more than a special teams body, I'm scared.

Dez Southward was drafted in the early 3rd round to start at free safety. The fact that he was moved to corner (where there seems to be a logjam) and a vet minimum backup may be required to start at FS reveals Thomas Dimitroff being Thomas Dimitroff. What a train-wreck of a draft pick that was. Just like Lamar Holmes, 95 percent of the board called it too.

Thought the same thing when he was signed.

TheFalcoholic, you asked why we cut Godfrey. (Sorry, the forum issues still won't let me use things like the Quote box or make paragraphs) Godfrey wasn't bad at Safety, but not spectacular. We had a need and tried moving him to CB. That failed horribly and he was released kind of as a man without a position. I'd think you'd still get good to serviceable out of him as a safety.

I agree. He's a great guy to have behind the injury prone WillyMo but starting him at FS would be a mistake.

Well since no one has brought it up what about Tru?

We could try and make him an Earl Thomas/Devin McCourty type and allow Collins to be the #1 corner, with Alford/Southward/King competing for the #2 and #3 CB spots.

Just an idea I thought I would throw out since good FS's are becoming very difficult to find.

You need both, kemal isn't good at both, moore is a better fs than he is.

Corners usually convert to safety because the are not very good playing corner.

Tru is becoming one of the best young cover corners in the league; converting him to safety would be a terrible idea.

I actually agree 100 %. I don't think he's incapable, but if he's being considered for the fs spot, those lapses in coverage you mentioned absolutely will get us burnt. Can't have that as a free safety.

This was field hockey, right? Our LB's were in the penalty box and Detroit was on a power-play, right?

I mean why does it look like they're playing with 11 to our 7?? Where the **** were all our guys in the middle? They literally had 3 receivers essentially open with nobody near them for 10-15 yards, and we only rushed 4.

Thank gawd Nolan is gone.
