Falconsfan567
I think it has always been known that one of the reasons FSU never joined the SEC was because of how easy they had it in the ACC and that they wouldn't have had it nearly as easy in the SEC and Bobby Bowden confirmed that on the Paul Finebaum show. SacFalcFan
that is what most who were around that time believed regarding fsu. fsu guys tried to spin it as something else, but the reality was Bowden and the powers at fsu knew they would have a much easier time dominating a basketball conference and they did. they had an inferior conference in football they knew they could easily handle. I am happy bobby bowden went on record about it and shut up part of the fsu fan base who would never admit it. now this question will never be asked again or debated. Same here, very glad that Bobby finally admitted publicly what everyone knew all along.

The closest thing I ever heard to that was FSU saying they didn't want to be in the same league as Florida.
Volunteer Falcon
I've head that USCe and Florida had an agreement to never let Clemson or FSU into the SEC. Not sure how true that is, just something I've heard for a few years now.

The SEC has shown that they will chase down every last dollar and FSU in the conference would be great for business.
Carter
Well I know for sure SC doesn't want Clemson in the SEC. Being the only SEC program in state means a lot to them. Clemson does well enough in recruiting as it is.I don't know about a lot older lol... I'm "a lot older" than people in high school n lower maybe. I just turned 32 earlier this month. If FSU did at one point have an opportunity to pursue SEC membership, it's undoubtedly the right decision by Bowden and whoever else to stay put. I really doubt they would have the legacy they do.
DawgBone
I always heard they were also blocked by SEC members. Same with Clemson.Same with GT. Dodd arrogantly withdrew from the SEC and, years later when GT wanted back in, several of their rivals fought their bid.

I really doubt they would have the legacy they do.I'm 28 so yeah you're older, but I thought you were a couple of years older than 32.But FSU did have that chance to join the SEC, I posted about it a while back. It was back when the SEC was pursing 2 teams to get to 12 so they could have an SEC Championship game and FSU was one of the programs they were going hard after, the other programs they were considering were Texas, Texas A&M, Miami, Arkansas and South Carolina. That left Florida State, Miami and South Carolina vying for the second invitation. Florida State was clearly the SEC’s first choice. The major roadblock was scheduling. On August 3, Bobby Bowden admitted to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “I like to win games, and I can’t think of a tougher place to do that than the SEC.” Under the proposed division alignment, Florida State would face Florida, Auburn and Alabama every year, which raised objections from FSU Athletic Director Bob Goin. “Most conferences have got two really strong programs,” Bowden continued, “but top to bottom there isn’t one close to the SEC.” Another report, by Mark Maske of the Washington Post, suggested Florida State refused to be in the same conference as Florida because the Gators “once fostered an SEC blackballing of the Seminoles.” In 2001, a Florida Times-Union retrospective quoted a FSU booster as saying, “There was quite a bit of feeling that we didn’t want to be entrapped; a feeling that among some fans that if we go into [the SEC]…we’d be kind of a stepchild.”http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2011/1990-sec-expansion-southeastern-conference/

Falconsfan567
The Hurricanes haven't been the same since they moved to the ACC.A lot of that has to do with all the NCAA penalties they had to deal with and hiring crap coaches after Butch Jones left. youngbloodz
They didn't need to be in the SEC to get their national championship dreams crushed. Miami did it enough for them

Falconsfan567
UF would never allow FSU to join the SEC1 school can't stop another school from joining a conference when it takes a majority vote for yes or no. Florida could have voted no all they wanted to but if the majority voted yes then FSU could have joined the SEC. But it never got to that point because FSU never wanted in the SEC. Not sure how true that is, just something I've heard for a few years now. the SEC is much different now than it was back when they added south carolina and arkansas. at that time no one was stopping fsu from joining the SEC. that was just some joke of an excuse by fsu fans for avoiding what we all knew at that time and what bobby bowden publicly said finally. however times have changed a lot and yes there are enough votes to keep certain teams out of the SEC and you can bet they will stop fsu from joining the conference now. besides it making very little sense adding them, you have enough programs that will work together on it to make sure they keep out certain teams for obvious reasons. But it never got to that point because FSU never wanted in the SEC.think about it for a second. This is business. FSU joins the SEC they would have a huge advantage in recruiting. Do you honestly think these presidents in the SEC aren't close? Do you think they all hate each other? If one of the top programs didn't want another school to join you best believe they had other schools in their corner. One thing i know is how college football works. UF would have done everything possible to keep FSU out of the SEC. I promise that

Sure it could happen now but we don't know for sure.UF would never allow FSU into the the SEC. This is a school that only plays FSU in football because it's basically a law they play each other . They dropped their series against Miami cause they knew it was easier to get to title game without having Miami on the schedule. And let's not pretend the SEC was a juggernaut in the 90's. Nobody was scared of the SEC back then
