Cam Newton: Regression Is The Norm

A thought came to me today while browsing the Huddle. It was just how awful Cam Newton really is.

Over on that board, they're in love with some of his records and stats. Youngest QB this, 100 TDs that, 4,000 yards, etc.

So I went to check them out. And that's when it occurred to me:

Cam Newton is not only regressing at a fast rate...but the Panthers are most likely better with out him. He is also a stat padder.

Let's take a look at his first few years:

2011-

4,051 yards, 21 TDs, 17 INTs

Panthers Record:6-10

2012-

3,869 yards, 19 TDs, 12 INTs

Panthers Record:7-9

2013-

3,379 yards, 24 TDs, 13 INTs

Panthers Record:12-4

2014-

3,127 yards, 18 TDs, 12 INTs

Panthers Record:5-8-1(with him at QB)

Looking at these stats you can come up with some conclusions:

-Cam Newton gets worse every single year

-He has double digit INTs in every year

-Without including his running stats, he seems to be an incredibly average-below average QB

-He has never passed for 25+ TDs

Then came to most non-surprising conclusion: The worse Cam Newton does, the better the Panthers are.

The only exception to this rule is last year, when the team pretty much imploded and came down to earth. Luckily, Derek Anderson and a Falcons choke were able to lead them into the playoffs.

As you can see, as Newton's passing yards go down, the team gets better. His TDs and INTs tend to fluctuate, there's really nothing feasible to say there other than the obvious fact that Cam is terribly inconsistent as a passer, and is sometimes even downright awful.

Let's a look at those passing yards. They go down every single year. In his first year, he was known as an all out gunslinger that shoot it out with the best of them. He flung the ball all over the place, with the help of Steve Smith being a faster deep threat of course.

But the team shifted. With the introduction of Gettleman, the team became more defense oriented. They began to play like the 49ers, Seahawks, Ravens, and other grind it out team.

So what do the Seahawks, Ravens, 49ers, and Panthers all have in common? They all have mediocre QBs that are hyped up by their fan base to be much better than they really are. The defense even carried two of these to SB rings while the other appeared there.

Cam Newton is the only one not there. Why is that? This Panthers defense is obviously up there with the best in the league.

Here's the cold, hard, truth: Cam Newton is the problem.

His first few years, he was not some gunslinger as advertised. He was a stat padder. He wanted all the highlight plays and runs. His reckless abandon play style cost them games.

Once the defense came along however, he had a great year in 2013. Sure, the stats went down, but he did a great job of being a game manager. It seemed maybe he had turned a corner, maybe he had learned that he wasn't as good as his hype, and that he would settle down into his mediocrity.

2014 only proved that to be a fluke.

He went back to his same ol, team-detrimental, wannabe Brett Farve garbage. His ego simply could not take accepting the fact that he isn't that good.

In two less game he nearly met his 2013 yards total , and throw only one less interception. He had a 5-8-1 record while on the field.

Thankfully, Derek Anderson doesn't have an ego and was able to settle in and be a game manager like he's supposed to.

And that brings up the whole painful point: With an egoless game manager, the Panthers would probably be the best team in the league.

However, they are held back by the constant overthrows, interceptions, and fumbles of Cameron Jerrel Newton.

Cam was great in his game manager role. He even threw for his most TDs ever! But that was only an aberration. One small blip in a career full of failure.

Face the facts: Cam's ego and unwillingness to be self-aware and man up to the fact that needs to be a game manager to succeed is what it costing the Panthers from being top dog in the NFL.

This year, he single-handedly caused his team's implosion. It's obvious from that terrible playoff run he had and how good they were with Derek Anderson at QB.

This year is make or break for Cameron. He will either:

a ) Accept his scrub status and game manage his way to the playoffs

b ) Try and be a real QB and throw his team right into the gutter like he did in 2011, 2012, and 2014.

That's simply it. Cam Newton is nothing special, and probably won't even be until he himself realizes one thing:

He is not, and will never be, a legitimate NFL QB.

Nice analysis

The only big redeaming intangible is his elusiveness running

Teams are learning how to contain him

The first year he looked awesome

He adjusted immediately to the speed of the pro game

He was going to be big

Was

A telling sign to me is Cam doesn't want to learn

After a drive what do you see Matt and Drew doing?

Fervently studying the formations the defense just showed them

Headset on and another coach on the sideline

All in

Cam?

Sits by himself with a towel on his head

He will play just good enough to get a huge mega salary deal from the Panthers that he will never live up to.

That defense carries that team

Note how bad the D were early in the season

The Riverboat is tied to Cam

When it would be better set adrift

I wouldn't devote seven minutes of my life to any falcons player.....

Dude, this is the very definition of ad hominem attack. If you can refute what he wrote ON AN NFL SOUTH SPORTS MESSAGE BOARD, which is you know, ABOUT the NFCS, then please provide us with your retort. Otherwise it comes across as whiney, snarky, and I don't have an answer for this.

It's not like the OP said, Cam is dyoosh and sucks at life. He gave a statistical analysis with a theory. You can refute it with your own stats, otherwise it looks like Check and mate.

We await...

His "attack" carefully excluded all of Cams rushing stats, and his opinion is simply not worth my time.

Cam is not a running back...

...but if you must. His rushing stats have regressed as well...

2011: 706, 14 TD

2012: 741, 8 TD

2013: 585, 6 TD

2014: 539, 5 TD

What is Ryan numbers from 2012-2014??

I ml

Let's talk about his regression..

Also less attempts mean less yards usually but yards are your main criteria.. Why? What about comp% QB rating and Td-int ratio.. Which all improve from 2011..

Where is that in your dumb *** novel..

Haha... You dumb son of a b*tch...

Matt Ryan has been within 200 yards (25 away from his best last season), 4 TDs, 3 INTs and 2% comp percentage over the listed years...

You really are ********...

**** you *****..

2012 Ryan 32td-14int 4,719passing yards 68.6 comp%..

Has he hit those numbers since then??

No... Then Stfu and kys with a rusty spoon..

When Ryan regresses, the team does bad...

When Cam does, you make the playoffs in back to back seasons.

What's that tell you?

WTF does Matt Ryan have to do with a Cam thread!?

Oh, I know. There's no defense for the Cam nuthuggers except, "Yeah but Matt Ryan poopied himself..."

Every time. Every time. Not a single one of you Rivals can discuss your own qb's without bringing up or comparing them to Matt Ryan.

Jelly much???
