Initial Draft Grade

Recommended Posts

I don't typically partake in grading the draft until draftees contracts are closer to expiring but I think you can evaluate a team's performance within the context of the overall value they took away. Here is my initial grades and analysis.

1) Vic Beasley - A- Beasley should emerge as an instant impact pash rusher but I would expect 1-2 players drafted much later develop into better all around players over time as he will likely never be a force against the run even if he produces double digit sacks on a consistent basis.

2) Jalen Collins - A Collins was a great value in round 2 as he possesses about as much upside as any corner in this draft. He also provides a ton flexibility in our secondary by adding to our corner depth.

3) Tevin Coleman - B+ I wasn't a huge Coleman guy because I felt we needed more of a thumper to complement Freeman. What stands out about Coleman is that is was able to produce huge rushing numbers on a very mediocre Indiana football team.

4) Justin Hardy - A Hardy was a player I really liked leading up to the draft. He really has few weaknesses in his game outside of less than ideal size but we have seen smaller receivers produce with much greater frequency in recent years (ie. Welker, Antonio Brown, TY Hilton, etc.)

5) Grady Jarrett - A+ Jarrett was a tremendous value later in the draft and he should be able to contribute immediately to the defensive tackle rotation.

7) Jake Rodgers - B- Not really an inspiring pick but this is the type of player you take late in the draft. Why draft a college player who has already maximized his ability when you can take a project who has a higher pro ceiling.

7) Akeem King - C+ King will compete for one of the last roster spots and special teams duty.

Overall grade A From top to bottom it is one of the better drafts I can remember. We will see how this stands in about four years.

Rodgers and King are two guys I'm not worried about. Anyone drafted past the 5th round is lucky to make the squad and has about as much potential as some of the UDFA. You'll never see me complain about ANY draft pick taken past the 5th because getting one of those guys to contribute on your team would just be simply lucky and it doesn't happen often.

A B for Coleman? Tough grade.

Like I said I wasn't a huge fan coming in because I felt we needed a thumper and so much of Coleman's yardage game on his many big plays. He could be a nice home run hitter but we may still struggle to convert on 3 & 1 or 2.

You just said you expect him to be an every down player in another thread.

That doesn't contradict what he wrote here though.

OP: I think your grades are fair. Agree on most accounts -- excited to see the front 7 this year.

You must not have watched him play much. He was at worst the 3rd best back in he draft, and possibly the best with Gurley's knee being questionable. Many Big 10 players thought Coleman was better than Gordon.

About Vic Beasley... Why does everyone act like he can't play the run? He had 44.5 tackles for loss over the last 2 seasons. That's a lot of negative yardage for someone that supposedly shouldn't be on the field for run downs.

it's because of his size and because the pundits say so Lol. Seriously though his size is a question. I know there have been small guys who have succeeded in being solid every down players (i.e. mathis, dummervil..) but that does not mean Vic will be able to. Luckily, and I can't believe I'm saying this but we have Kroy who is above average against the run to rotate with him on run downs

How do you give Rodgers a B but King a C+? Lol but other than that, I agree. Like others said, I don't get how you give Coleman a B+ even though he didn't fit what you wanted. The man did nothing but produce. Plus, he's more physical than given credit for. He's not a power back, but he's not a pure speed back. He can wear a defense down. That's what you want. He's about as balanced as they come. I can't find a hole in his game yet.
