GoodnightATL
We can't rebuild a team in one year. This year I think Quinn goes with a vet with experience in Godfrey. If he was sold on Southward he wouldn't even bother trying him out as a corner. Next year we draft a legitimate starter as the projected safety class is miles stronger then this. The same goes for TE IMO.

mashburn*Fibonacci
Next year we will be picking later in the draft which is easier to land a safety vs trying to get a pass rusher.

DarrellShropshire
If we got the safety we need this year, we wouldn't need him next year, though. This crop of FS and SS, was very weak. Especially at FS.
JayOzOne
True enough. But if you need a quarterback and next year's class is weak, you typically reach this year to get the 3rd round QB (for example) in the 2nd round to have a chance to win sooner. Sometimes it works (Vikings and Teddy B.), sometimes it doesn't (Cleveland with Johnny Rehab). But if you can improve your team, you should try to shore up your weak areas sooner. If safety derails our defense this year, it could cost somebody his job.

FS is key in this defence so unless you have real talent eg. Earl Thomas you go with experience. Not sexy I know but makes the most sense. And again if Dan Quinn was high on Southward at FS he wouldn't even entertain trying him at corner when time would be better spent developing his safety skills. It would be a waste of reps IMO
JayOzOne
Last year, I was hoping that Tru and Alford would give the line time to make plays in the backfield. This year, I'm hoping that the front seven has improved enough to make the FS job less of an exposure. We don't need the guy shaking in his boots back there praying that the ball doesn't come his way. But as long as we don't have the starter making DeCoud style f*** ups and mental errors, we should be okay.I hope.
AndySG
Sounds like an easy out, but it's far too early to say. Zach Hodges was a first rounder in some eyes in September and went undrafted. How many players have off years when they look as if they are going to be stars and how many come from nowhere? I don't even want to think about next year until our season is over! FenixFalcon
Still confident Southie can get the job done, If Moore and Ish stay healthy I'm sure we will be fine since we picked up Collins (which could probably be a swing safety/corner as needed). Alford still should get the benefit of a doubt for another season too, so worse case scenario we give Rocky a shot at safety if Corner still isn't working (behind southward) and see how it pans out. spanish_falcon
I really like Su´a Cravens but he´s more a hybrid safety - linebacker. Really similar to Shaq Thompson

It would be a waste of reps IMOI think this is right, but there's a difference between being confident in him as a player and thinking we can improve the position. Dez might not be a starting FS (though he might be this year), but he can be a nickel corner and backup FS just fine. For a 3rd round pick, that isn't so bad. I agree though -- it's obvious we were looking at S in this draft and just didn't find one we liked. Even the S we took will end up at corner. My guess is we'll patchwork it this season and get our S in FA or the draft next year.

Tribal Chief
Can we at least wait to see exactly how southward or even Ishmael does. People won't allow Alford to be written off, they shouldn't either

People won't allow Alford to be written off, they shouldn't eitherI think people are reading too much into all of it. South worked at corner -- he must not be a good S prospect. We drafted Collins, Alford must be on the outs. Etc.Maybe they have thoughts about how to move these guys around and utilize their strengths? Or maybe they're just seeing what they're capable of. Our new offense scripts the first 15-20 plays to see how the defense reacts to them. Maybe Quinn is taking that approach to our defense, shifting the pieces around in a voluntary minicamp just to see what they can do.

But that's what us fans do, a player we don't like must go.
Dirtybird#11
There is a guy I knew he goes to Kentucky now. His name is Ashley Lowery.... He is an upcoming senior and has the length that Quinn likes, and I'm sure he'd be estatic to come play for Atlanta. If he plays well this season I could see him sneaking into day 2. He is originally from White Co. High school and I've seen him play a few times when he went there... He's super athletic played a little RB in his time their too!
