Dez Southward

Recommended Posts

Falcons 2014 third-round pick Dez Southward practiced at cornerback during the team's pre-draft minicamp.

The 68th pick in last year's draft, Southward had a disappointing rookie season at safety, failing to beat out Kemal Ishmael for snaps. Southward stands 6-foot, 211 and is wildly athletic. In ex-Seahawks DC Dan Quinn's Cover 3, Southward could make for an intriguing press-corner prospect. Of course, that need was lessened when Atlanta drafted CB Jalen Collins on Friday night.

Did you give away a draft pick or something? They warned that people spoiling picks might not be able to sign in until monday. Just sayin.

one thing to keep in mind, this is a new staff, Southward wont get a free pass even if he was a 3rd round pick. he will compete at whatever the staff finds best for him, if its corner, he has to earn a roster spot like everyone else.

Alford is 5'10 and about 190. Dez is 6'2 and about 210. I'm going to suggest Southward will get by far the majority of looks at FS over Alford.

You can't just take a corner who can cover and plug him in a safety. I'm not saying Alford can't do it, but if they move Dez to corner and Alf to safety, I'm going to start having nightmares about Smitty and Nolan playing tackles at guard and guards at tackle again.

My guess is they worked Southward at corner anticipating they may get a safety in the draft. Since that didn't happen, I'm betting he goes back to safety, at least for this season (I think KOG is right that we'll attack this position and TE next offseason).

Delvin McCourty who is the same size as Alford and played CB throughout college was converted to FS in the NFL. Charles Woodson played CB throughout his career and he now plays FS. Antrel Rolle played CB in Arizona and has been converted to safety. It can happen
