Scheme Specific Draft = Clear Cut Direction From Q

Recommended Posts

In my 35 years of closely watching the Falcons drafts, I've never ever seen a draft that had so much purpose, meaning and clear cut direction. This is coming from Quinn, but you have to give TD and Pioli credit for finding the kind of players Quinn asked for as well.

Our front office and coaching staff is refreshingly 100% on the same page.

In all these 35 years I've been left asking myself after a Falcon draft 'wonder why we picked that guy" or "wonder where he will fit in" only to watch the majority of them fail. I see a clear fit with each one of these picks, I see them all contributing THiS YEAR....WOW!

If anybody had gone out and mocked our draft, they would have been taken to a padded cell, in a straight jacket, with a horse syringe of Thorazine. It is incredible how well this has turned out. Picks with a clear purpose. I couldn't be more excited, unless we somehow get some OL help. I know that's like complaining about a couple clouds on an otherwise gorgeous summer afternoon.

Isn't is amazing what happens when you have a HC with a clear of how he wants his team to play and the qualities of the players he can communicate to the GM, Personnel Dir and Scouting staff? I'm looking forward to see who we pickup in the UDFA class this weekend.

I could tell there was a major organizational shift when TD and Quinn had their first press conference. It was obvious to me we finally had a clear cut system in mind and a clear cut direction. When we picked up those FAs it confirmed this to me. Now, this draft....wow.

How can any of us forget last preseason when the players, the DC and Smitty were all contradicting themselves in the media about what kind of defense we were implementing? It was clear to me then we were a ship without a rudder, and THAT was all Smitty. As head coach, it was his job to set the direction of the team and tell his GM what kind of players he wanted. Smitty sucked the last two years here, it's more obvious as time passes.

Quinn came in and told TD EXACTLY what he wanted in this team, in this defense, in players, and TD and Pioli have done a magnificent job getting Quinn the kind of scheme specific players Quinn asked for.

I think the best thing about what Quinn does is he simplifies the scheme even though it is scheme specific to a extent. What this does when simplifying it is it allows you to go BPA because the terminology will allow the BPA to show his true talents and not have to think so much. Ozzie Newsome is known for drafting like this as well for baltimore.

Think about the pickup of Grady Jarrett. We lost Peters in FA and Grady can step right in, immediately, and take his one gap NT spot. Grady has an awesome first step burst and IMO will be a big improvement over Peters in his second season, and I liked Peters. We needed a disruptive one gap NT and got him in the 5th round!!

Think about Justin Hardy. He excels on 3rd down conversions. After losing Gonzo, we really needed a WR or TE that was proficient at picking up 3rd downs and Hardy is PERFECT fit. I expect to see a lot of him this year, and we got him in the 4th round!!!

Our new running back, what a PERFECT for for a ZBS. My God, to get a guy in the 3rd round with his ability who can be an immediate contributor is a huge score.

We needed a big, long, fast CB to jam up receivers at the line, to help mask our LBs issues with coverage. We got a CB in round 2 that has potential to be the best CB in this draft AND is a perfect scheme fit.

These players may not have been great fits on other teams, but here they are perfect.

He mentioned looking at what players can do and not what they can't do very often. This draft is the epitome of that. Everyone fits a very particular scheme while being weak in certain areas.

- Beasley couldn't be a straight up 4-3 DE but is ideal for the LEO role and can rotate to SAM as well

- Collins struggles in zone and on slants but is violent in press and has his best football ahead of him

- Coleman's home run speed is terrific for play action, my least favorite scheme fit but a supremely talented player and can develop patience (I hope)

- Hardy doesn't have elite speed or size but is perfect for finding the soft spots in zones and ideal for the west coast offense

- Jarrett can't two gap and is somewhat smaller but can be a terrifying penetrator 1T with stupid upside

Let's see what's next...

Nailed it. This is exactly what we are doing. now we add the new guys to the current guys who will be utilized better, especially guys like Hagemen, and the sky's the limit.

Our entire FO and scouting department deserve a huge amount of credit. It cannot have been easy after spending the year scouting for the needs of one scheme and coaching regime (whatever they required) to finding players that suited the requirements of a different scheme and staff.

They must have worked very hard to adjust to the changes and they did a brilliant job.

I 100% agree with all sentiments being posted. The draft was absolutely precise and they all have great characteristics (being falcons fans, etc). They're not only potential pro bowlers but players that will be cornerstones at their position for long as time allows. Even FA was slow, deliberate and on point in getting the exact pieces we need for utility.

Super excited for this team and the vision Quinn has brought to the organisation. Rise up!

No, it's a legit concern, what I hope it means is they know all the injured players are healthy again and they like the talent on hand. They may like Person more than posters here do, or think some combo of Konz, Stone, Hawley, Person, Gunn, Schreader or Holmes can handle LG.

May grab a vet after Jun1 cuts.

You know, while I am a little concerned about they're planning to do at LG, with this FO, I'm sure they have a plan. This has been a great off season, looking forward to September.

Expectations and reality are two different things.

Does that work for your expectations or just everybody else's?

I'm expecting you to keep your word and eat a bug, reality is, you're trying to get banned so you don't have to.

In all my years reading this board, I can say without a doubt Gazoo you never look at a Falcon's glass as half empty!
