likeriver
Can someone explain or link materials better explaining what the ZBS is and how it's different from what we were doing before? Also things like what the advantages and disadvantages are. Sorry I'm not an expert on football but I'm learning gradually. capologist
Here's a great article with pics and vids that point out what's going on with it.http://www.sbnation.com/2014/7/25/5928877/alex-gibbs-seahawks-broncos-texans-nfl-zone-blocking
Psychic Gibbon
MBS is pretty straightforward: You have a specific assignment and you have to overpower that assignment. It is much more downfield oriented than the ZBS. Bigger and stronger O-linemen are needed for that blocking scheme.ZBS is more complicated: Each O-lineman is given a zone to operate in and he has to make judgement calls on the biggest threat to take out in that zone. This scheme also involves a whole lot more movement around the LOS than the MBS since they're trying to open up holes by maneuvering defenders around than by pushing them backwards. More athletic O-linemen, typically smaller, are required to run this.

rollo lawson
Are there draw backs to employing zbs type lineman when it comes to pass protection? That's the $100 million question we should be asking.
NOVAFalconFan
Are there draw backs to employing zbs type lineman when it comes to pass protection? That's the $100 million question we should be asking.Well, there were the last time we tried this when YKW was still starting for us. Like most things, though, that was probably a combination of a lot of things, not just the ZBS.
rollo lawson
That's why I want us to go after a talented olineman in the second that just happens to be a good fit in the zbs. AJ Cann and Tre Jackson are talented players that both are familiar with zbs concepts. Both were on with Pat Kirwan these past few weeks and said as much. We need to stop acquiring lesser talented bargain bend lineman with hopes that they might magically turn into solid to above average starters. capologist
Peter Konz may very well be a good guard in this scheme, that's his skill set. That's one of the reasons why I was so perplexed as to why we drafted him...
rollo lawson
The problem then is that we had Alex Gibbs who believed in getting cheap OL. The cheap OL worked fine when coached up for the ZBS but when it came down to holding down the fort in pass pro they struggled. Even if you have use ZBS the talent and skill of the individual O-linemen is still important. This^^^^^
