Interesting Take On Winston Vs Mariota...

So, Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston? Who will be the superior NFL quarterback? At this moment, Mel Kiper Jr. and Mike Mayock are debating this at an NFL Draftniks Anonymous meeting in Todd McShay’s basement.

Mariota or Winston? It’s like the argument that Eddie had with Shrevie and Modell in the 1982 film “Diner:” “Sinatra or Mathis?” Boogie ended the Sinatra-or-Mathis dispute by simply saying, “Presley.” Which means, in deciding between Mariota and Winston, maybe the correct answer is “Brett Hundley.”

Anyway, the NFL draft is next week. Couch Slouch has watched so much film on these guys, I can tell you which one sneezes better. With a clicker, a clipboard and a crayon, I have compiled a list of 12 categories comparing the two Heisman Trophy winners. Here are my findings:

Turnovers: At Oregon last season, Mariota attempted 445 passes with only four interceptions; at Florida State, Winston attempted 467 passes with 18 interceptions. Ball security is of the essence in the NFL, or as Mike Ditka told me last week, “Turnovers will kill you.”Edge: Mariota.

NFL readiness: Mariota ran a spread-option offense at Oregon and operated out of the shotgun. Winston ran a pro-style offense at Florida State and once went on a shooting spree at an apartment complex with a BB gun. Edge: Mariota.

Communication skills: Mariota is shy in public, a reluctant speaker when he has to take the podium. Winston stood atop a table in the student union last autumn and shouted an obscene phrase directed at women. Edge: Mariota.

Legal team: Mariota does not have a lawyer. Winston’s former attorney, David Cornwell, recently said of Winston, “He’s ready to be an NFL player on the field. But he’s not ready to be an NFL player off the field.” And this guy was representing him. Edge: Mariota.

Singles scene: Mariota broke up with his long-time high school sweetheart last year and has settled in with a new girlfriend. Winston had a sexual encounter in 2012 that he says was “consensual” with an FSU classmate who accused him of sexual assault. Edge: Mariota.

Vertical jump: Mariota – 36 inches; Winston – 28¹/₂ inches. But Winston’s jump easily exceeds Mariota’s best numbers when he’s hopping a fence after departing a supermarket with $32.72 worth of stolen crab legs.

Athleticism: Mariota is a fluid runner, with great acceleration to the perimeter. Winston has pedestrian 4.97 speed in the 40, but it improves to 4.29 when he’s fleeing a crime scene. Edge: Mariota.

It's kind of scary how much people want to hang Winston and see him fail. For what? Stealing some crab legs? Playing with a pellet gun? Cursing in public? Yeah......what a freaking dirtbag!

I don't think it's the actual carrying out of those acts, but just not thinking before doing them.

AND these "People" you are talking about that "Feel that way and are hiding dirty secrets too," is kind of a stupid point because it doesn't matter. If you get caught, you get caught. Plus the chances of getting caught and it being blown up by the media multiplies 1000 times when you are in the spotlight like Winston.

Look, I don't care either way - just wanted to make a point.that Winston made some dumb decisions and they are considered by many as REALLY dumb considering what he had/has at stake. Plenty of people do dumb things and as I said, a lot of times don't get caught and most people don't care unless you are someone that will attract media attention in a millisecond (such as the probable first pick in this years NFL draft).

You also failed to mention his sexual assault allegations.

He obviously seems to be able to make good decisions ON the field. I think it is fair to judge that he hasn't made very good ones OFF the field and a team considering drafting him should be concerned about that.

Nov. 25, 2012: A woman calls 911 to report that there are two men on a bike path on the Florida StateUniversity campus with what appears to be a black, long-barreled pistol. Police respond and draw their guns as they approach Jameis Winston and his roommate and teammate, Chris Casher, and ultimately handcuff them. The two tell the officer they were shooting at squirrels with a pellet gun, and they are released without charges being filed.

Nov. 25, 2012: A few hours after the incident on the bike path, Winston, Casher and two other Florida State players, Mario Edwards and Kenneth “P.J.” Williams, allegedly engage in a BB- and pellet-gun battle at their apartment house, inflicting an estimated $4,000 in damage. Management at the apartment house declines to press criminal charges after an FSU athletic official vows that the players will pay for the damage.

Dec. 7, 2012: Winston is accused of raping a woman at his off-campus apartment. The woman reports the assault to police that day and five weeks later calls a detective and identifies Winston as her attacker after seeing him in a class. Tallahassee police drop the investigation, contending the woman has refused to cooperate, then revive it nine months later and sent it to State Attorney Willie Meggs. Meggs conducts a new investigation but concludes that there is not enough evidence to file criminal charges. Winston’s lawyer contends the sexual encounter was consensual. The U.S. Department of Education later launches a federal investigation of the school’s handling of the incident after questions arise about whether Florida State followed the provisions of Title IX, and in August 2014 the school launches an investigation of Winston under the student code of conduct.

July 21, 2013: Winston is accused of entering a Burger King in Tallahassee and helping himself to soda from the fountain machine without paying for it. A restaurant employee later tells police she gave Winston a cup of water but that he poured the water out and helped himself to several cups of soda despite her objections. No charges are filed.

April 29, 2014: Winston is accused of stealing $32.72 worth of crab legs from a Tallahassee supermarket. He is given a civil citation that allows him to perform community service and is suspended from the FSU baseball team until he completes that work. Winston tells police he “forgot” to pay for the crab legs and publicly apologizes.

May 20, 2014: Winston is expected at a code-of-conduct hearing for Chris Casher and Ronald Darby, two FSU teammates who alleged the witnessed a portion of the sexual encounter involving the quarterback and the woman who accused him of rape. They are both accused of violating school rules. Winston does not show up for the hearing, and his lawyer contends that no one from the school ever asked him to be there – something that is disputed by attorneys involved in the process. However, FSU officials later acknowledge that they have no way to force a witness to attend a code-of-conduct hearing.

Sept. 16, 2014: Winston is seen by several students jumping up on a table on campus and screaming a sexually charged expletive-laced phrase that was made popular on the internet. FSU head football coach Jimbo Fisher suspends Winston for the first half of the team’s upcoming game with Clemson, and school officials vow that he will be subject to “internal discipline” – most likely under the school’s code of conduct. Winston apologizes.

UPDATE FROM FOX SPORTS:

Oct. 13, 2014: ESPN reports that FSU's compliance department is investigating whether Winston accepted money in exchange for autographs. The university's athletic director issues a statement on Oct. 17, explaining that the compliance staff looking into whether Jameis Winston accepted unauthorized benefits for his autograph has "no information indicating that he accepted payment for items reported to bear his signature, thereby compromising his athletics eligibility."

In my eyes, this is a guy that feels a real sense of entitlement and doesn't know how to handle being in the spotlight off the field.

Didn't say he's made smart decisions. Simply saying, I'm not judging him on 'em until I see how he operates from here on out. Has he shown great character so far? No, but I'd rather have him and his crab legs and his pellet gun, than a kid that has a hard time speaking in public and getting his teammates fired up.
