Would You Be Opposed To Switching To The Metric System?

I know that I am used to looking at things in terms of miles, inches, gallons, ounces, feet, yards, etc... but it just seems to make so much sense to have everything in base 10 format. milli-, centi-, kilo-, it seems like it would be easier.

What do YOU think?

ONLY if they legalize marijuana across the board. Much rather sell/buy kilos than pounds or grams than ounces. Back in the 60's & early 70's we bought it by the kilo, not the pound, then split into ounces. It also wasn't nearly as good as what we find today.

What I do now requires us to sell and quote everything by the square ft or linear ft, so it'd be a real pain in the arse, but if they legalize the good stuff, nobody'd really care how long it took to learn how to convert.laugh.png

The only thing I can think about when I read this thread is the conversation between Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction.

Vincent: And you know what they call a... a... a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

Jules: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with cheese?

Vincent: No man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the **** a Quarter Pounder is.

Jules: Then what do they call it?

Vincent: They call it a Royale with cheese.

Jules: A Royale with cheese. What do they call a Big Mac?

Vincent: Well, a Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it le Big-Mac.

Jules: Le Big-Mac. Ha ha ha ha. What do they call a Whopper?

Vincent: I dunno, I didn't go into Burger King.

Pay more taxes with metric. Square footage factor for property taxes. Convert to square meters (1 sq. ft. = 929.03 sq. cent.) and there's more square meters than square feet in same area. Same with gallons. Gas has local, state, and national environmental impact taxes built into the price per gallon. 1 gallon = 3.785 liters. That extra 10 or 15 cents that gets added to the gas price isn't going to be lowered. Government will not lower tax rates without a revolt, but they'll be happy to bring in more tax revenue with different measurements.

If you can't think in metrics, you probably wouldn't learn metrics. Much of it is abstract, something you pick up by living. How long is a mile? Don't give me numbers or try to break it apart in its components and rebuild it. Go outside without any help, just shoes, shirt & pants and no signage. Now walk a mile. I bet you get awfully close to that mile. Now, if you are not familiar with metrics, try doing the same, walk a klick. Until you think in it rather than trying to do conversions it won't work, at least imo. I think that us why it didn't work 50 years ago in school.
