Analyzing Previous Fifth Round Picks

Recommended Posts

Since losing our fifth round next year I went back and looked at 2008 through 2014 drafts to see how we did when picking in the fifth round and we have not hit on anything noteworthy picks, just look at these names that we selected, most were projects but still this list is amazing in the worst way,

2008 Draft

5 3 138 Robert James Linebacker Arizona State 5 19 154 Kroy Biermann Defensive End Montana

2009 Draft

5 2 138 William Middleton Cornerback Furman 5 20 156 Garrett Reynolds Offensive Tackle North Carolina

2010 Draft

5 4 135 Dominique Franks Cornerback Oklahoma 5 34 165 Kerry Meier Wide Receiver Kansas

2011 Draft

5 14 145 Jacquizz Rodgers Running Back Oregon State

2012 Draft

5 23 158 Bradie Ewing Fullback Wisconsin 5 29 164 Jonathan Massaquoi Linebacker Troy

2013 Draft

5 20 153 Stansly Maponga Defensive End TCU

2014 Draft

5 7 147 Ricardo Allen Cornerback Purdue 5 28 168 Marquis Spruill Linebacker Syracuse

- Some interesting things to note out of 12 players selected in the 5th round just 4 remain with the team today.

- The ratio of offense picks vs defensive picks were: 8 picks to Defense, and 4 picks for Offense.

- The positions selected as follows: LB - 3, DE - 2, CB - 3, OT/G - 1, WR - 1, RB - 1, FB - 1.

- Players of Note: Kroy, Rogers, and that's it no other players as of right now have made much of an impact on the team.
- Moving forward TD needs to work on this round more to find players who can at least develop into something more than an one year stint.

It's actually a lot better than people give credit for. Kroy and Quizz have both produced admirably for 5'th rounders. Reynolds was horrible but he looked like he could be a decent backup at OT in Detroit last year. Ewing and Mass had great upside, it just never happened for obvious reasons. Map has shown flashes and people are high on Allen and Spruill both. Franks was always decent depth at CB, just not as a return man.

Everyone expects a Richard Sherman now.

Yeah you make good points but seems we could have done better finding someone who has a little more upside if not just slightly but this could also be a problem with developing talent too.

Kroy Bierman -- and I am no big huge fan of his by any stretch -- was a fantastic 5th round pick. A 5th rounder is lucky to make the roster. Kroy actually played above average for years.

(Smitty still should not have started him all of last year. And the flashy red contacts were irritating while we kept losing game after game because of awful defense. But all of that doesn't change the point).

Quizz was a great 5th round pick too.

Still, I agree overall, we should have gotten more out of our 5th rounders.

Yea, those guys were not bad picks for 5th rounders actually...I hated the Allen pick though, hope he proves me wrong....man, what if meier and Ewing were not made of glass they could have been real gems for TD....I think Ish is turning out to be his best gem maybe.....

Edit - oh yea, and Bosher was an emerald....
