Too Many Guys In Front 7 To Double Dip In Rd 1 And 2? Go Off In Rd2?

Recommended Posts

Guys,

After my most recent review of the front 7 and our defense, I really do not see us taking more than one front seven player in the first two rounds. Furthermore, if any 2nd defensive player is drafted, I could argue more that it should be a CB/S player depending on the Alford/Southward situation or a future DT...I can't see Babs and TJax making on this team beyond the 2015 season. That would leave us with 2 DTs...

I honestly think we will take an offensive player in round 2, but who knows at this point. Look at what we currently have in the front seven. If we drafted any guys, where and when would they play?

I can justify the pass rusher pick at #8 for the LEO, but after that...I just don't see it. Compound this with the 1 year "prove it" deals, I just think if 2 of those guys "prove it" we would want them back, so if we drafted a player at that spot, we would either move him (out of position) or he would be stuck on the depth chart?

Currently 10 players on DL

LEO: #8 Pick / Biermann / Maponga

DT: Soliai / TJax / Havili

DT: Hageman / Babs

DE: Clayborn / Goodman / Shofield

Currently 8 players at LB

WLB: Durant / Bartu / Spruill

MLB: Worrilow / Stupar

SLB: Reed / Shembo / Starr

Currently 9 players in SEC

CB: Trufant / Adams / Allen

CB: Alford / Mabin

FS: Southward / Baker

SS: Moore / Ishmael

This is just me thinking aloud. I guess I see this draft probably addressing the team holistically and not just defensive front seven. It wouldn't shock me if after Round 1 (pass rusher), we drafted a CB/S or offensive players in round 2 and 3 (ie. OL, RB).

In my opinon, the best playmaker available in each round should be taken.. We are missing that currently on the roster outside of a handful of guys, and we sure didn't pick up many in FAs.. so if in my mocks lately, i've been faced in the second round with the prospect of Gurley vs Stephone Anthony. For me going Anthony has usually yielded the best results.. my first four rounds have gone like this

1. Edge

2.Gurley

3. Marpet/ Koundijo

4. Best Safety Available

or

1. Edge

2.Anthony

3. Ajayi/ Coleman/Langford/Best saftey Available

4. Saftey/ David Cobb..

Im almost always liking the second option better... Man i wish we had more clarity on the safety and guard positions. Seems like we should have filled one of those holes in order to be able to get solid day 1 starters first four rounds this year..

It would be nice if we knew what we had in Schraeder. Is he good enough to be a competent starter or should we look at Fisher or one of the other tackles?

I agree. We know what we have in Jake, but where is he gonna play next year? My assumption is TD and CO. won't give up on Baker and Holmes for this year...So I guess we will go into the season with all four at OT. Starters would be Baker (LT) and Matthews (RT) with Schraeder and Holmes as backups. If Baker goes down, Jake will move to LT and whomever best Schraeder/Holmes will move into RT.

The only real positition I could see us doing anything with on OL is LG, but even then we have Hawley, Konz, Stone, Carimi and FAs to compete for a C and 1 guard spot (assumes Asomoah has the other guard spot).

When reviewing this, I could even argue that we wouldn't look to address the OL unless it was in the first three rounds. After that, no one will be better than what we currently have on our roster for next year.

Not really any talent at outside rusher beyond the first round, except maybe Golden. I don't think our signings rule out a possible Mike or Will in the 2'nd though, if we go that way. Besides Durant and Worr, who do we have for those spots? I guess you could argue Reed for MLB but... eh. Imo the 2'nd pick should be an offensive talent, either an OG or a TE preferably, though it really just depends how everything falls to that point.

Nate Orchard has NFL talent, and may still be there in RD 3

Been saying this for a while. We're pretty deep at DE, SAM, WLB and DT. NTs can be found after the first three rounds. MLB and LEO are the only needs in the front 7 right now, depending on Quinn's opinion of Worrilow.

I would not be surprised if we went offense to maximize the value of the pick. If Roddy or Julio gets hurt, that offense looks like crap real fast. I think the defense, with any of Beasley/Gregory/Fowler/Ray is at least 20th as is. If either of our top WRs go down, we are looking at a less than 20th offense.

it depends how we feel about our linebackers. I had Michael Bennett in one of my mocks as the heir apparent to Babs. Lots of options with that #2 pick.

That's the pick that could go any way literally. I don't think Bennett would be the best pick as I think Hageman would be a better heir at the 3T and I like Bennett. I'd rather take Marcus Hardison later.
