Mocker Focker 2.0--Warning It's A Long Read

If you don't like long reads ignore and move on

Well here's my go at the the mock game. I'm making the following assumptions:

1) were staying Hybrid approach and type of players for multiple fronts

2) # 1 is based on the candidates were interviewing (Quinn, Rex, MacDaniels and Bowles); only Austin is a primary 43 guy. Even McDaniels hadNolan as DC

3) Pur pass rush and Linebackers suck

4) Our offense needs "tweaking"

So forget about 34 vs 43..think multiple..don't get hung up on who is in the LB or DE spot...to pull off multiple fronts, you need a variety of players. We have a solid core of big interior DL, but we're not so hot in our collection of traditional 43 OLB/34 ILB types and we all know the pass rush issues

I also think some our players that currently start are depth players...guys like Worrilow come to mind. Stone is another.

Here's our 2015 FAs and cuts or Don't Re-Sign:

DEFENSE:

1) Osi Umenyiora, defensive end/LB

2) Kroy Biermann, outside linebacker/defensive end

3) Cliff Matthews, defensive lineman

4) Babs, DT

--too old and ineffective. Rather he retire

5) Corey peters

--meh

6) Bartu

--nothing there. Move on

7) Massaqui

--what has he really shown? Nothing. Pioli helped draft Starr

8) Maponga

--again, nothing shown...another failed Nolan guy

9) Charles Godfrey, safety

6) Javier Arenas, cornerback

7) Robert McClain, cornerback

8) WillMo, Safety

--always injured

9) Sean Baker, Safety

--who's this guy again?

10) ) Nate Stupar

--Spruill will be better

11) Weatherspoon

--can't stay healthy

OFFENSE:

1) SJAx, RB

--just retire, dude. It's over

2) Sam Baker,OT

--See SJax entry

3) Jonathan Scott, offensive lineman

4) Mike Johnson, offensive lineman

5) Joe hawley--I'll explain..but he's coming off injury and unproven

5) Drew Davis, wide receiver

6) Patrick DiMarco, fullback

7) Bear Pascoe, tight end

Re-Sign:

1) T.J. Yates, quarterback

--if price good, why not?

2) Jacquizz Rodgers, running back

--on a modest deal, quizz ain't bad...he does a lot of little things right. Need depth

3) Antone Smith, running back

--if cheap--yes...if not cya

4) Eric Weems, receiver

--I love the Weems ma

7) Gabe Carimi, offensive lineman

--Gabe is solid as depth

8) Josh Wilson, cornerback

--nice corner if price is right

9) Dwight Lowery, safety

--solid vet

10) Matt Bryant, kicker

--just a stud

**********************************************************************************************************

EXTERNAL FREE AGENTS:

1) Jerry Hughes, pass rusher (takes Osi's spot) 5 yrs 40M (13m guaranteed)

--he'll cost, but will be worth it. Pay the dude. Now if Chiefs keep Hudson, and let Houston go FA...well you know I doubt Hughes is target.

2) Rodney Hudson, Center (upgrades Hawley's spot, pushes konz and stone to reserves)

-5 year $23M (less than Max unger)

--Hudson is a great young center. Tough and great mobility. I like hawley but Hudson is better and hawley is coming off injury. The Chiefs have a tough choice--pay Houston and lose a guy like this. I'll take either one

--his price tag won't be astronomical and he's a Pioli pick originally

3) David Harris, ILB, (takes Bartu's spot)

-3 yr 16m (similar to Wesley Woodyard's deal)

--good mid priced vet. If sexy rexy is choice real possibility

4) jermaine Gresham, TE

-4 yr 20M (similar to Bennett's deal in Chicago)

--just a good player. Not an elite TE the bengals probably hoped for, but a solid receiving and blocking TE

INEXPENSIVE SIGNINGS

5) Jerrell Powe (Replaces Matthews)

3 yr 9m

--big and squatty NT. Pioli knows him well. We really don't have a NT beyond Soliali and adding an extra big body strengthens the rotation and allows for flexibility and innovation ineither 34 or 43 scheme alignments

6) Byron Maxwell, CB (replaces McClain)

--big physical corner that can play safety as well..gives us size at position

7) Kyle Wilson CB (replaces arenas)

-former first round pick that hasn't panned out. Sometimes a change of scenery works. Has ability

--cheap

8) Henry Hynoski, FB

--like an extra OL. Might be easy to slightly overbid the Giants. Depending on OC may not be need

--cheap 2 year deal maybe 6m

Although the above FA list seems extensive, remember not all will be expensive and FA transactions occur quite often with us. Hughes will not be cheap. Hudson, Harris and Gresham will be moderate deals. The rest are not overly expensive players.

DRAFT:

Rd 1. Vic Beasley, OLB/Edge rusher Clemson 6'2" 235 (replaces Kroy )

-great first step and high motor.big time college production, and more powerful than his size suggests. Very useful and adaptive in terms of scheme. You can line him up in the Von Miller-type role in 43, inside and outside in 34, on the strong side in 43 under, off the edge (but not continuously IMO) and even as a WLB. Just a great player. If we went Shane Ray I wouldn't cry,but I prefer Vic

Rd 2. Paul Dawson, OLB/ILB TCU 6'1" 235 (takes Godfrey's spot--we carry extra LB)

--another fluid and athletic backer. I think he's best suited as ILB in 34 or on the weak side in a 43...has good pass rush ability,so could be sent on blitzes with regularity from any LB spot. Great coverage ability and a secure tackler

Rd. 3 Mike Davis RB, South Carolina , 5'9" 228 lbs (replaces SJax)

-has the burst and acceleration to be a premier back. Great agility and receiving ability as well. I love his compact frame--just looks like a NFL back. I've watched him closely and he also has enough speed to break long runs..always keeps legs churning

Rd. 4 Devonte Fields DE/OLB 6'4" 250 lbs: (replaces cliff Matthews)

--above average athleticsm, and nice frame to add weight and strength. Watching him I see a guy who's pretty good in space and can cover,so he gives you flexibility. Will he be instant starter? Nah..could be nice rotational guy, and possible gem

Rd 5. Jarvis Harrison, OG Texas A&M, 6'3" 325 (replaces Gunn)

--sites have him in 4th-5th round..I'd be ok with him in 3rd even. Needs work, and technique is inconsistent, but has great quickness and thick body. He's a guy that with some refinement could rise to be blalocks replacement in near future. Good developmental guy

Rd 6: Rory Anderson WR/TE , South Carolina 65 227 lbs: (replaces Drew Davis)

--is he a TE? Is he a WR? Does it matter? I don't think so. I've scouted him and I see a tenacious blocker, who's a good athlete and has nice hands. I see a more talented Finneran, who can be a H-Back, a WR and inline athletic TE

Rd 7: Ray Drew DE/DT, UGA 64 284 (Replaces Babs)

--Maybe my favorite long shot in draft...I think he keeps growing and becomes a nice 5 tech and DT

I like it a lot. Really my only complaints are Willy Mo and Corey Peters, I think they need to stay but not if they will cost a lot in Peters case. I think our draft is good and FA looks solid.

Edit: I think I saw somewhere that Fields was staying to increase his draft stock for next yr but the report could have been wrong. I think the deadline is Jan 15 so we will know officially then

Not a fan of upgrading C before LG. I like a few other TE FAs more than Gresham. Phil Dawson is not worth a 2nd round pick. And I prefer Shane Ray.

All my opinion, of course, but I like how much effort you put into these mocks.

I'd like to hit the LG position but I don't think we can absorb the cap hit if we cut blalock this year. That said Hudson is a clear upgrade from our centers and strengthens our overall OL

I took Harrison to "groom" but I agree it's tough to keep blalock lol

I'm ok with any TE than can catch, but Gresham is a great blocker

I think Dawson is a stud...I'm ok with Ray or Beasley

Thanks for great comments!

I love Moore but he's brittle...the deal he signed was team friendly in that the dead money was all up front. We cut him, the hit isn't terrible and saves us 3.5m or so in salary (I think). Without looking I think he has 3 years in the 12-15 m dollar range left...he's not worth that.if he restructures, maybe

Peters is ok...I'd rather get stouter tbh

Great comments!

Thanks

I like Dawsons production, but from watching him on tape I came away disappointed. Also i think it's over drafting him at the top of the 2nd. He's an inferior prospect to Kendricks, McKinney and Perryman who should all be available.

I disagree slightly with your assessment, that said McKinney is enticing. I can't figure out if he stays inside or adds weight and moves to OLB in 34. Perryman I just don't like. He reminds me of a slightly more talented Worrilow

After scouting Dawson from a perspective of moving him inside in a 34 or outside to WLB in a 43 I like him much better.

Don't understand why people want to get rid of William Moore.

Money and injury prone.

He's too small for ILB in the 3-4 imo. WLB he'd excel.

I think McKinney could line up pretty much anywhere. He's not yet a fantastic player or anything, but he has the size and speed to do it all. His best years of football are ahead of him once he gets some NFL coaching.

I love his potential..just feel like **** be a first rounder...I certainly would not cry to get Ray or Beasley in the first and McKinney in the second!

I still don't care for perryman, though.

Heck if Dawson slipped to the third (at this point he won't but who knows post-combine); I would understand a draft of Ray (or Beasley), McKinney and Dawson in the first 3 rounds. We really need an infusion of talent in the LB and pass rush areas. Right now we have an overachieving UDFA, a brittle spoon, a cruddy bartu and a a good but not great Shembo

Let me preface by saying I absolutely love the Beasley and Buster Anderson picks.

That being said, I literally only quoted the parts I don't like.

Cutting Bartu, Mass, Maponga, Moore, Baker, Spoon, Hawley and Pascoe is pointless. If that stuff happens, it'll be in August, not February/March. Cutting Baker costs money until June 1.

TJ Yates is a scrub and we'd be better off sticking with Renfree.

Carimi sucks.

Jerry Hughes is nowhere near worth $8m/yr. If you're spending that much money on a pass rusher, it better be Brandon Graham and/or Pernell McPhee.

Jermaine Gresham isn't even worth his weight in salt. He's a bad receiver and an even worse blocker.

Byron Maxwell & Kyle Wilson have both proven that they aren't capable of being starting man to man CBs in the NFL. Maxwell is an excellent zone CB but Wilson is already a failure in the Rex Ryan defense so there's literally no point in bringing him in to fail under the same system. You can't call it a "change of scenery" when he's going from one team to another but keeping the exact same coach.

Just Say No to early round RBs.

Cliff Matthews is a 3-4 DE, not an edge rusher. Don't say you're replacing him with a 250 pound OLB.

We don't need to replace Gunn, we need to replace Blalock.

Definitely concur cuts will be late (if at all)...the post just got longing it was too much trouble to show times cuts will happen lol but you're spot on

We don't need Matthews--don't get hung up on 34 or 43 and DE titles. An OLB can be a DE as Cana 300 pounder (5 tech). Matthews is literally not talented, and we have plenty of true 5 techs and DTs. The 250 pounder in this case is a pass rusher. Period. Whether hand in dirt or not. The cuts and assignations of slots are for roster purposes only. In fact I used Sexy Rexy's roster as a go bye lol. The amount of "LBs" and "DEs" I kept were similar to his past rosters. In fact if you read by Fields name I list DE/OLB

Wilson is interesting to me. I actually meant to delete that signing, but for cheap...why not.

Dude, I'd love to replace Blalock. Not sure we can afford to cap wise. Hope so. Either way Harrison is a developmental guy,and probably not an immediate starter. Gunn is expendable.

In my scenario, we simply drafted depth and a possible guy to groom in the 5th.

On pass rusher FA signings. I get the McPhee love. Spot starter who's shown worth. I'd be great signing him. I don't get the graham love. Over-drafted guy to start with. Has been in 34 and 43 and is nothing special. Hugheshas been ascending pass rush skills wise, even before the bills got super stout. Different level of player than graham IMO...but cool if that's your opinion

Lol I'm not getting in yet another rb debate with you. We just have differing views...all cool though

Good comments as usual, man.thanks

The average starter in the NFL will play about 1000 snaps in a season.

Jerry Hughes in his last 1000 snaps: 18 sacks, 15 hits, 53 hurries

Brandon Graham in his last 1000 snaps: 13 sacks, 14 hits, 66 hurries

Pernell McPhee in his last 1000 snaps: 11 sacks, 30 hits, 62 hurries

oh man, a long read, and not a great one at that.

HYBRID? NO.

Cutting Moore will save you 1 Mil. Not worth it. And you did nothing to upgrade the position.

Cutting Maponga, Bartu and Massaquoi saves you nothing, why not at least bring them to camp with a new staff. Makes no sense.

Cutting Joe Hawley saves you 3 mil, but I'm not sure Hudson will be as cheap as you think (btw Max Under signed a 4 year 24 mil contract, you would be looking at 5 year 30 plus for Hudson maybe). At least the signing would make sense with the Pioli connection.

Jerry Huges will probably look for more than Michael Johnson last year. he is ranked as the second DE behind JPP.

Byron Maxwell cheap? Funny guy. He will cost starter CB2 money if Seattle cant keep him cheap.

Who is Jerell Powe and why is he making 3 mil a year after he made league min this last season...

Draft seems fine, I don't like the multiple stuff

I think you just cut people to cut people after a while. Why cut Hawley, our lone good center, and keep Konz for the infamous "depth" excuse? You know depth should be capable of actually playing when needed?

I would be pissed if we cut all of these guys. Full out rebuild.

I should have clarified..many of the cuts would be post camp...it got too long...on Moore I'm ambivalent if he healthy, but he's owed 14 m or so over 3 years and a base salary of over 3m I believe

Also why do you assume the 2nd year Southward can't start next year instead of Moore? Ditto with Ishmael who looked very good. Retain Lowrey and You have a vet who can back up both spots, and I did say bring back Motta or get another "guy" additionally Maxwell can and has played Safety.

Cheap for a number 2 cb is used as it's not pass rusher or cb1 dollars.

Powe is a heckuva NT with some pass rush skills for the Texans. Pioli drafted him

The multiple stuff will continue if Rex is coach, and most likely if Bowles or Quinn is hired...I say if quint is hired it will continue because he uses the 43 under that utilizes 43 and 34 personnel

Thanks for comments!

Why keep hawley if you sign Hudson? If you sign Hudson keep the guy that can back up G and Cand the cuts, while I didn't state this, include post draft, after 1 jun and after training camp...too hard to predict when cuts (if the happen) will occur

In some ways we might have to expect a rebuild..but note where the rebuild I'm positing occurs...it's in the LB and pass rusher areas. Our interior big boys are fine, our secondary is fine. We have some nice depth pieces in Shembo and Worrilow at LB, but what have maponga, massaqui and bartu shown? Is it really a rebuild moving on from Kroy (subbing Hughes), Osi (Beasley), Mass (fields), and bartu (Harris ILB)?

And Vel, many of these guys like kroy and Osi are FAs so is just don't re-sign. Plus I forgot cliff Matthews...are we really going to miss him? I doubt it

Also, keep in mind many of these "massive " cuts are 5-7 and UDFA players that just haven't developed after 2-3 years. This year we pick early and its a good bet our 1-3 round picks will probably play or start early. Would you sit a Beasly amd Dawson on bench in favor of massaqui or maponga? No because if they were good players you wouldn't be picking pass rushing prospects...you'd be looking to add other areas.

Mike smith would be the guy who drafted Beasley, but keep and start Kroy..that's crazy. Move forward imo

Back to offense, hawley is a 1 yr starter essentially who got hurt...coming off injury and if--which is a big if--we add Hudson again he's explendable. And yes I'd go with the Konz that can play G as well as backup C

That's a re-tool in a positive way imo

i like the position choices in free agency. would rather a different pass rusher than hughes but thats just me.

draft is great. fields reminds me of jamie collins.

Thank you, sir.

Talk to me about Hughes....I don't see the Ray edwards and Michael Johnson comparisons people talk about. Why do you not like him?im curious to see if I'm missing something

I rather like fields and do see a Jamie Collins type player potentially

Man Blalock has been the most consistent OL on the team for a long *** time. Is no one interested in at least re-signing him and letting him retire a Falcon? lmao

Dude gets no love lol

that's because he's been consistently average. He's a slightly above average pass blocker, slightly below average run blocker. We need to go from "average" to "good" or even "great" in some spots on the OL, and his is the easiest one to replace because guards in general have a lower value in the draft and you can draft tackles in later rounds who you can transition to guards.

I agree, guards are generally under valued in the draft and talents like Larry Warford and Gabe Jackson often fall. I think we can get better at the position, either through the draft or FA, and also create cap room.

Check out Austin Shepherd. Alabama's starting RT. He's projected to be a third day guy, I think he can be an all-pro guard in the NFL.
