Steak Made The Most Salient Point On Coaching Hires Yesterday.

Recommended Posts

Yep, roast! They are both alive and well here in Atlanta! And both do national spots for other stations from time to time, so that's probably why Chris shows up on your dial.

Ah, ok, cool. I am glad they both landed back on their feet and you are right, I heard Chris on some national show up here. Thanks for the update.

Finally, good analysis minus the pure hatred seen spewed on other threads about the coaching hire process. It is very true and lot of different pieces all have to come together to make the whole, and if any piece is out of alignment it can throw the larger whole off track.

To an extent that's right, but the truth is that you can make at least an informed and educated decision. We have some information about these candidates. Does that mean a bad candidate can't go to another team and win a Super Bowl? No. It just means we can weigh the odds out for each and try to pick the one we think is most likely to take this team to a Super Bowl and win it.

Not really.

Not one of us has anywhere near enough information on these coahes, their vision of the team, team building philosophy etc to be able to give an "informed and educated" opinion on who is best.

As the OP said,it is a crapshoot. There isn't a candidate out there who can guarantee future success.

Steak interviewed Jets beatwriter (something "Mehta") this morning as well - to say the beatwriter gave Rex Ryan a "glowing endorsement" would be an understatement:

  • defensive guru - best in the nfl
  • master motivator - players will play hard for their coach
  • can get along w/ anybody (mentioned Dimitroff)
  • not power hungry when it comes to wanting to control personnel
  • learned from some of past mistakes

Steak said to Mehta - sounds like you are describing Vince Lombardi. What does Rex not do well?

  • develop QBs - said that obviously would not be an issue for Falcons having Matt Ryan.

Finneran asked about who Rex's OC would be? Mehta said maybe he would just keep Dirk Koetter

BOOM!!!!

I agree totally with that statement that after all is said and done, it is still a crapshoot regarding the success of a HC. Much of that reflects the fact that more so than any other sport I know of, the NFL is so extremely complex regarding the numerous factors that determine who wins and who loses. Vince Lombardi could not have had his success without being surrounded by great HoF talent. Great HoF talent cannot have success without being surrounded by at least capable talent and coaching. Finally, when you get it all together and reach the big game, you just never know when your leader on defense will head to the streets of Miami late at night looking for a hooker while his wife snoozes peacefully in their room.

I would sign up for a Ryan/Koetter combo right now.
