Brian Billick On 680 The Fan 1-5-15

While our personnel is certainly a problem, Smith had at least some say on who we draft / sign. Also, Smith had years with this team and the defense seemed to get worse. So he had more than a year and failed. And if he didn't have the players he wanted, he should have insisted on getting the players he wanted.

KoG you better be careful here for several reasons.

1) You are talking about Worrilow. Who in somes minds is better than Kuechly.

2) You are saying Smith didn't have talent on that defense to rush the passer.

3) You are also sayin that building from the line out is the right thing to do (Gives Smitty credit)

You're right. Seems like amnesia around this time every year.

Players have come out to say they weren't being utilized to their strengths

They were asked to do things that they did not excel in. Making players fit a scheme instead of making the scheme fit the players

And these were players Smitty gave the green light on to bring in, in fact he even fought to bring in some of these guys

Any way you look at it, isn't it ironic how the players he wanted could not fit his scheme?? Glad he's gone

Ok I am not going to debate the whole Smith and Nolan stuff because it is pointless and it gives faeless more reason to talk. If you think we have talent on this defense outside of Willy Mo and Tru something is seriously not right with you. I will give Jackson and Soliai a pass due to some scheme issues that may have existed but even if you add them in, the talent level doesn't go up much. So Billick does have a point on the lack of talent. Rex Ryan or anyone else for that matter isn't going to be able to come in and fix this in the next few years. Even if this was possible TD is still there picking talent so the problem still exists. Even though the coach may change almost all the problems will still exist.

What % of the lack of talent do you attribute to TD though? With more and more blurbs from our own front office, as well as other NFL sources, that seem to indicate both Blank and Smitty were very, very heavy involved in player acquisition decisions, it seems hard to put all the blame on any one person.

TD is certainly not without blame, but when you have an owner telling him what to do, and a coaching staff doing that as well, he really doesn't have the freedom to build the team as he sees fit.

So what % is on TD? How much is on Blank? Smitty?

Wasnt it just descovered that Smith was the reason for a lot of what we had on D?

Depends on who you ask. Many of us kinda had gotten the hint already

Most definitely he did. The problem in my mind comes with the fact that any coach worth his salt knows that you build from the lines out. This is what got us in this mess to begin with is not keeping our lines up and spending on Skill positions. We started to correct that problem last year. We were only in the beginning phases of rebuilding that D. Blaming anyone is kind of senseless considering that the pieces just are not there. We started re-building the lines we never touched the LBers on the D. Instead we went with UDFAs and a 4th round draft pick. See why we had no pass rush? This was predicted by many after the draft since our D looked like crap atleast on paper. Then it came to fruition and some on TATF start throwing around the word mediocrity and the such. This was no surprise at all to most of us. Changing a coach isn't going to do anything. That is like having a refrigerator full of dog food and thinking changing the chef will provide you with a gourmet meal.

Nobody thinks worrilow is keekeelee.

Some of the homers compared him to Luke last year

Naturally, if you didn't agree with their assessment you somehow lost your fanhood

Billick was spot on for the most part. While I wouldn't call Smitty one of the best, he is much better as a coach than Dimitroff is as a GM. Some of the people here whining about what Billick said are in denial. Smitty had this team overachieving which made the fans have unrealistic expectations. Smitty can only do so much and reality came crashing down.

This franchise can only go so far with below average talent (NFL wise). This team needs a couple strong drafts to even be a real contender for a Super Bowl.

Did he justify and explain why his brother in Law and Nolan opted to bring in a pair of 3-4 DL and then line up with 4 man fronts; why they thought they could stop the run with a nickel D; why they opted for stoutness over pass rush; why they thought it was sensible for our best 2 pass rushers to be keeping the bench warm, and why they thought it was best to use our 4-3 DT as a DE in a 4 man front and our 3-4 DE as a DT?

They oughta name this thread after a river in Egypt for all these indignant responses.

Let's see...who has more credibility? A Super Bowl championship coach or a bunch of sour fans carrying pitchforks with Smitty's name on them?

Time will tell I guess.

Imo Billick is correct. Other than Tru, our defense barely has a player who would start on a top tier NFL team.

You've convinced me

It's obvious he has no bias or favoritism in the matter
