In Search Of Stability: Atlanta Falcons Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers go all the way back to 1933, but for a straight-up comparison to the Atlanta Falcons, let's pick up their head coach history since 1966, the first year on the field for the Falcons.

Since 1966, The Steelers have had 4 head coaches, as follows:

Bill Austin 1966-1968

Chuck Noll 1968-1991

Bill Cowher 1992-2006

Mike Tomlin 2007-Present

The Falcons, on the other hand, have had 12. If you care to count the interim coaches, make it 17. For brevity, I'm not gonna list them all in this post and you all know what Google is.

Great and successful head coaches don't grow on trees. In fact, they're hard to come by. And in this day and age of "WIN NOW!", picking the right HC to get your team to the mountain top quickly is a daunting task, to say the least.

We all know that Smitty helped bring more success to this franchise than we've ever enjoyed, but it was clearly time for him to go. He wasn't the right choice for long term success and stability, but who will be? There are no guarantees, but there is also clearly something amiss when you compare the success a franchise like Pittsburgh has enjoyed to what we've been dealt, a game of musical chairs for the HC seat and no championships.

This will be the most important hiring decision Aurthur Blank will make (so far), as owner of the Falcons and now that the smoke has cleared form Smitty's firing, I wish Aurthur the best of luck. Get it right this time, Mr. Blank. Get it right.

First order of business is for TD to GTFO of the way of the HC.

TD was an opposite of Smitty, and his asz needed to be Fired for it too,

and if the right Coach comes along,, then TD is f'kng GONE.

Dan Reeves assesment of TD and Smitty was Perfect, and should we get the

"Right Guy",, the reason TD will be gone is because he will not

subordinate to a HC,,, especially not after treating Smitty like a Sock Puppet.

Pioli?,,, yeah it is likelY that he would stick around to help with the team

personnel and coaches., That would be a GM being the Sock Puppet for the HC.

And that boys and girls is exactly the type of HC that we need.

AND REX RYAN AINT THAT GUY! SO STFU AND GTFO ! emot-rant.gif

TD is a coach's GM. He, ad Blank, have said that TD goes with what the coach wants regardless of personal view. Placing so much blame on TD while know this makes your arguments a bit silly.

Don't know if that is quite a valid comparison. 3 of those 4 have multiple SB appearances and or rings. Is winning a product of stability or vice versa?

You might find your answer by researching the chuck noll tenure there. The roonies stuck with him even though it took several years to put it all together. The "winning" (consistantly) part didn't come until after that. Their first 40 something years were about as bad as ours

It is fairly impressive(?) that Pittsburgh stuck with Cowher so long. And front office-wise, they've remained incredibly stable even when things have gone south.

and you defending TD is well past silly.

The list of TD's failings is lengthy and that is exactly why he is on the short leash.
