Nino11
Perennial winners like the Patriots, Steelers, and Ravens have built there team in the middle to end of rounds for years. The Jaguars, Rams, and Cleveland (actually looking decent this year) have been at highest potential mediocre for years picking at the top of rounds. In the middle of this sorry season it's easier to check out and hope for the highest possible pick. It makes the losses hurt less (supposedly) but I know any fellow fan gets that twinge in their gut just like me when we lose a nail biter or get blew out. It's just in our nature to want to see the Falcons win. If we continue to suck and get a top 5 pick cool but I can't say I don't prefer the team to go and try and win even if we suck. Picking in the top 5 means you are alot further away from winning then picking in the teens to lower 20s. Top 5 means 27 other teams in the league where better then us. I rather go to the playoffs and get blew out then suck *** and hope for some rookies to come in and save us. At least get into the playoffs you never know what could happen. Despite everything we can still realistically win the division.
Dharma Initiative
Yep, and a lot of teams like the Raiders and Jaguars always have top picks and stuggle to do anything.Dimitroff is just a terrible drafter so I've accepted we won't find a good first rounder no matter if we pick 1st or 32nd
g-dawg
Detroit Lions got two superstars (Calvin Johnon & Ndamakong Suh) and a top 10 QB by having top five picks ;-)

At least we never took a kicker in round one or heyward bay in the top ten picks. As bad as td can be at times I'm not sold there is some stud we can steal next year. There has been a ton of turnover league wide the last few years in both head coach and gms. I'm worried it's going to be slim pickings when we need to replace next year. Brewcrew
It also means you have less money for proven FA vets because top 10 picks have historically been very expensive. The latest CBA has made this less the case, so we'll have to see how that plays out the next few years. But your point is valid. And tankers are losers. FalconBlood23
Well of course having a top 5 pick isn't a sure thing but having a top 5 pick means you have a waaaayyyy higher chance of getting a good player rather then in the 4th round or something. Nino11
Because our crappy GM can't find a legit impact player outside of the top 6 picks.Guys like Konz and Mike Johnson were highly touted coming out of college. Peria Jerry and Spoon have been snake bitten as well as Sam Baker and Willie Mo. Dominique Franks has shown something out in Baltimore and Chris Owens was well liked y NFL scouts as well. TD has found talent. He actually has found alot of undated free agents (Worrilow, Bartu, Reedy, Amsterdam) both what player has shown development under This coaching staff other then Ryan Trufant and Julio? Their our more top 5 bust then anywhere else. Alot of that comes with expectations being alot higher but really only the APs and Calvin Johnsons of the college game our truly worth top 5 picks. For every AP their is a Trend Richardson. For every Calvin there are two Mike Williams

He's looking at the big picture. And our failure in picks between #6 overall and the 5th round has been pathetic. Miserable. And totally unexcusable.Dimi needs to go. Even more than Smitty. MAD597
Us getting a top 5 pick means we have a much better chance of getting a better player and hopefully that player is a pass rusher. We are not going to win alot more games, we are not going to the playoffs or winning the division the best outcome for this season is a new front office and a top 5 draft pick.Winning 3-4 more games this year does nothing for us. Statick
It doesn't, but it's generally known that the higher the pick, the value of player ranked that high is potentially better and have a higher ceiling for success due to talent level, intelligence ranking, combine score, etc.It doesn't mean that the player will automatically generate a great player, but your odds are better in that you'll get a bonafide starter. MAD597
Also getting a top 5 pick can means we can trade around and acquire more picks if the guy we want is not in the top 5.A top 5 pick has more value for trades and a more likely chance of getting a better player. Even a madden playing kid could have hit more then this. I wasn't one for firing Smitty but barring a miracle run to the Superbowl I think it's time we move on. Dimitroff picked Matt Ryan so he might be less on the beheading order for me but I wouldn't be as upset if they kept him over Smitty

It's not just the high pick in the 1st round. It's the higher picks in EVERY round.

truth..
Nino, youre missing the point. All anyone is saying is that it is clear that we suck and this team isnt winning anything this year. At this point, we might as well try to help our own draft position. It would just help the next GM coming in. Obviously, Dimitroff, Smith and the players are gonna play hard....Im just not gonna be upset if we lose. If we win, great. Ill never cheer for a Falcons loss, but we are 2-6. If we lose a bunch of games to end the season, it wont bother me. Just beat the Saints and Im good.
DoYouSeeWhatHappensLarry
The teams that regularly draft at the back of the first round seem to understand how the draft game is played. In your typical draft, there's a substantial drop off between your Top 8-15 and the rest of the 1st round. So if you're in that top tier of the draft, you're often better off taking a guy there. If you're not? Your best bet is to probably drop back a bit and start amassing a collection of players. And not for nothing but a lot of the teams at the back of the draft have missed on a lot of their picks. The difference is they pick more players and they have pretty stable football systems to plug guys into rather than drafting guys to rely on in the short term. Thats probably my biggest criticism of TD....in the situations where he wasnt trading up, he should have been trading down. The Jerry draft and the Spoon draft and ****....even the 2012 draft. Trade backwards, accumulate picks and draft a boat load of players.
Nino11
there are very good players in the draft every year. find them.Exactly. No matter where you are you can find good players period. That's on the scouts/GM. Not the guys on the field playing or coaching putting bums on the field hoping to lose for a better draft pick
