Bench Ryan For Season

Recommended Posts

This is likely a recycled topic, but so are the "Fire _____" and "Who do we draft next year?" threads, so give me a break.

I'm starting to believe more and more that putting Ryan on the bench for the rest of the season is a smart move. It has plenty of upside, and almost no downside.

  • Keeps him healthy. Imagine him blowing out his knee in the last game of the year and not being ready to start until mid-season 2015.
  • Lets him "reboot". Ryan is starting to become a deer in the headlights. And why wouldn't he? Getting him off the field would let him calm down a little and maybe get some of his previous confidence back.
  • Gives Yates a chance to build trade value. Maybe T.J. Yates proves to the league that he's just a backup and nobody wants him. Oh well... But maybe he has a great game or two (Matt Flynn) and becomes a decent trade asset. He could fetch a 2nd or 3rd rounder from a team desperate for QB.
  • Limits Julio's numbers pre-contract. This might be debateable, but it limits the chance that Julio will have a monster second half going into contract negotiations. If he had to negotiate a contract right now, it would be favorable for the Falcons. If he gets 900 yards and 10 TDs in his last 8 games, that's a nice bargaining chip to bring to the table.

Totally agree we still have a shot at making the playoffs. Provided I don't think we have enough to make a big splash in the playoff, but I don't think that will change in a year either.

We are counting on OL holding up and Defense getting better. We are actually right there...too close to sit anyone. Now is the time where you DEMAND more from Matt, Roddy, JJ, Hester...the OL, Sjax and the DEFENSE. It can start this game too.

Nice thoughts GTFalcon, but really unrealistic.

What kind of starting Quarterback, let alone a $100 million dollar one, would agree to sit the rest of the season, only 7 games in, and wait/hope for a better record the next year?

Even if he did, you know what would happen first game the next season? He’d blow out his knee and be gone for good.

Even in the state they are in , if the Falcons do not fight and scrap for everything left they hope to achieve, they will never be worthy of even last place in their division.

"Hey Tom and Mike. We know that your jobs are in jeopardy, but the fans feel you should bench the best player on the team. Would you do that, please? It would be great for the team's future."

Why do people constantly feel that a coach fighting for his job is going to bench anyone "for the good of the team"? It's moronic.

?? Look at the divisional standings please.

Really? You really think that winning the division and going to the playoffs with maybe a 6-10 record if we are lucky is a good thing?

Come one we are probably one of the worst teams in the NFL right now, we probably won't win 4 more games but if we did and magically won the NFC south is that something to be proud of or something you want?

We will be beat by 40 or more point by a real playoff quality team on the road in primetime. I do not want to be the 2004 rams.

Even as bad as the NFC South is this year we still probably won't win it. Even 6-10 right now is a pipe dream for this team.

I do not want to witness the first 6-10 team to make the playoffs get beat by 40 points on Primetime TV. I'd rather tank and get a top 5 draft pick.

Forget the money he's being paid, but what type of competitor would agree to sitting out the rest of the year without injury, with the division still up for grabs (believe it or not), and more importantly when his team needs him most.

What type of coward-hearted message would that send? Ryan would instantly become the laughing stock of the league along with the rest of this franchise (if we aren't already). Who on earth would respect that?
