Something I Noticed About The Toiolo Drops

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else noticed how just about every ball thrown to him he has to squat and catch it like he's fielding a ground ball. For Gods sake, the guy is 6'8 with the wing span of a condor. Throw the ball up high. That last pass however was a straight drop. No excuse for that. I think by then the drops had gotten in his head. This offense is out of sync all the way around.

Toilolo does struggle terribly with low balls, but not coincidentally, those are the hardest balls to defend. They often need to be thrown and they need to be caught. So there's a serious deficiency.

And the answer is not to throw high - if one of those gets through, the pick percentage goes way, way up.

What occurs to me is that if Michael Palmer (who is currently doing well in Pittsburgh) was still on the roster, he'd be the Falcons best tight end. His overall balanced skillset is really what the team needs at the position.

So what is wrong with Roddy and Julio? Did they just forget how to catch a ball? This last game reminded of an NBA game where a good free throw shooting team all of a sudden can't make a free throw. Then the next night they go 24 for 25. Like I said before this team is out of sync mentally.

While I still think his drops are unacceptable for a player in the NFL, I do think the coaching staff is misusing him to a large degree. Like you alluded to, Toilolo would be much better served with jump balls in the endzone than having to catch low passes in the flat (the accuracy of the throws definitely falls on Ryan).

It is frustrating to see how low Ryan throws to him when he throws high to everyone else

I have noticed the same thing about the the throws to Toilolo. Tony requested the ball high, so it is not an observation out of the blue, that is where most TEs like the ball.

The problem is that Toilolo is not Ryan's first read, and by the time he looks his way, he is already under pressure.
