Desmond Trufant Might Be The Next Champ Bailey

I was reading this article earlier, and it got me thinking.

The best corner in the last 15 years or so is Champ Bailey. How did he get so good, though?

Well, when he was in Washington, they had absolutely no pass rush. He covered his ass off on every single play, and for way longer than most corners ever had to. Then, Bailey got traded to Denver, who had a perfectly capable pass rush. The 2003 Redskins accumulated 27 sacks all season, while the Broncos that same year had 35. 2004 Broncos, WITH Champ had 38.

I feel like Trufant is in an incredibly similar situation. He's already proven himself to be a top 15, if not top 10 CB in the NFL, and that's COMPLETELY without ANY semblance of a competent pass rush. WTF is going to happen when we get a decent pass rush game going up in here?

Not without grabbing picks he won't get any notoriety. His pass coverage is amazing yet QBs aren't afraid to test him as his ball skills aren't quite there yet. You can get away with throwing deep on him because he can only knock it down but the shutdown guys intercept those.

Not knocking Tru just being real. Picks get you attention and respect. He is an elite pass defender but only we will know that until he starts making teams pay for testing his side.

QBs are hesitant to test Tru. Watch games and watch how many times they look his way then look away. It's similar to Revis. He doesn't want the ball coming his way. Sherman and Peterson want the pics to make plays. Different styles.

Shutdown means you're getting nothing going over there. Picks don't get your attention and respect or Deangelo Hall would be mentioned more often.

Yep. That's the only knock on Trufant. He needs to start making QBs pay for going his way.

Not saying you're wrong, but what makes you think he was?

Haden and Peterson are hilariously overrated. ESPECIALLY Haden. In 2013, Peterson gave up 7 TDs, Haden gave up 6. Peterson had 3 INTs, Haden had 4. They've both already given up 2 TDs each this season. They aren't great CBs at all, but they've both got top 10 draft pick status so the media makes it seem like they're elite. Haden had a great rookie year, hasn't been anything more than just "good" since, and has played especially bad this season so far. Peterson hasn't ever had a top 10 kind of season. He was top 20 in 2012 and 2013, but that's not worth anywhere near the kind of money he made off of it.

Nnamdi was never shutdown. He wasn't even Oakland's #1 CB at the time. He just never got thrown to because Oakland's ACTUAL #1 at the time (Fabian Washington & Stanford Routt) was SO BAD that the QB never really needed to throw it towards Nnamdi.

We are talking about a 4x all-pro and all-2000's decade player here.

Nnamdi was a one dimensional corner.

He could only play bump n' run press-man coverage. Nnamdi was exposed once he had to play more off-man and zone coverage in Philly.

Trufant can play off-man, press man, and zone. He is a more well rounded corner, which is hard to come by because not even some of the best corners in the game play well under certain coverage schemes.
