Examining the Atlanta Falcons' roster:

QUARTERBACKS (2)

You can't ignore the way Yates played in the preseason finale at Jacksonville, completing 15 of 20 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns. It was a backup-worthy performance. Now, the Falcons will have to decide whether to keep three quarterbacks or take a chance of losing Sean Renfree with hopes of keeping him on the practice squad.

RUNNING BACKS (5)

Should be interesting to watch this group develop. Whatever happens, Smith proved himself worthy of more touches with an outstanding preseason. Let's see if he is truly incorporated into the game plan, as promised.

RECEIVERS (6)

Here is my thought: As much as it would be great to see undrafted rookie Bernard Reedy make the 53-man roster, the Falcons have to think special teams here. Weems and Roby are guys willing to throw their bodies all over the field to make a tackle or secure a block. And with as disastrous as special teams were this preseason, the Falcons need strong contributions from guys like Weems and Roby. Reedy ends up on the practice squad.

TIGHT ENDS (2)

Pascoe wins the backup role for his blocking, but Mickey Shuler put up one heck of a fight. A concussion kept Shuler out of the most important preseason game and thus, gave Pascoe a little more advantage.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (10)

Holmes should be set as the starting right tackle after a strong preseason. Some of Konz's mistakes in the preseason finale make me wonder if rookie James Stone might get serious consideration as insurance at center.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

I really, really want to put Travian Robertson on this list. Seriously. But something tells me he is going to be one of the toughest decisions in the room. We will see how it unfolds.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS (4)

It was a tough battle between rookies Starr and Jacques Smith, but Smith likely hurt his cause by being ejected for unnecessary roughness in the third preseason game.

INSIDE LINEBACKERS (4)

Still believe Shembo will grab a starting role over Bartu sooner than later. Veteran Pat Angererdoesn't make the cut.

CORNERBACKS (5)

Although Wilson hasn't been spectacular, the Falcons need experienced cornerbacks to go up against some of these high-powered, multiple-receiver offenses they will have to face. That is why McClain, Wilson, and Arenas need to be part of the defensive rotation as extra defensive backs.

SAFETIES (5)

Baker was added here just in case Lowery and Southward have lingering concussion issues. Both missed time this preseason because of concussions, and Lowery saw his 2013 season end prematurely because of a concussion.

SPECIALISTS (3)

As long as these three guys are just doing their jobs, everything should be fine.

I'm thinking about 48 spots are set in stone. Most of the question marks are noted by Vaughn, but to summarize I think they are:

#6 WR: Reedy, Boldewijn, or Roby (and Boldewijn's injury may take him out of the running altgoether)

#3 TE or #10 OL: Schuler or Jones

Travian Robertson or Tyler Starr: Starr did not impress me at all during PS. I didn't notice Robertson one way or the other, but I feel like this team needs a backup NT.

#5 CB: Wilson or Allen

#5 S or #6 CB: Baker or Wilson/Allen

I would swap Robertson for Starr. I think Osi could fill out a spot at outside linebacker. Robertson played a lot better then Starr. The difference in game speed might be too much for him he is playing too slow or overthinking making him miss a lot of tackles and out of position

I'd rather keep Robertson and only 9 offensive linemen. I don't think Jones sticks on the Final 53; we should be okay with Schraeder and Carimi as the top OT backups, with Jones on the PS.

I'm not sure Starr (or Smith) make the roster. Likewise with Dobbins / Angerer. I'd honestly prefer to fill the final OLB and ILB spots with players that other teams cut this weekend. I think we can find upgrades from other teams that are stacked on defense, like Seattle or St. Louis.

Other than that, I pretty much agree with everything McClure has here. The only other changes I might make are cutting Konz and keeping Stone or cutting Roby and keeping Ebert. We'll probably try to sneak Renfree, Reedy, and Boldewijn all onto the PS.

I don't know that Starr or Maponga make it. Surprised he has Allen off but I guess I shouldn't be. I could see that but I'm just not big on Wilson sticking around even if he is a veteran.

If Konz is still here it's just b/c Dimitroff has too much pride to recognize he missed on that pick. Nothing he's done last season or this preseason warrants him remaining on the roster.

I think Maponga makes it for sure. Starr on the other hand... I dont know.

I don't see us not carrying a 5th rd pick that has been solid this PS. Allen will be on the roster. I think Wilson won't make the cut - or maybe we use him as trade bait + Renfree for Michael Sam or Westbrooks from the Rams.

I disagree with his logic on Roby over Reedy. Roby hasn't been anything "special" on special teams. Reedy has played special teams as well and has way more upside as a WR.

I agree that we need to find a way to keep Robertson on the roster somehow...

Not sure that Sean Baker will make it.

"Big ballz" (Allen) will be on the 53 though so he has that one wrong.

yup ^^^ all of this

I forgot about Baker. I don't see him on the roster either making room for someone else Vaughn left off.

Leave Starr on PS along with J. Smith and leave Robertson as backup NT. If a team grabs one we still have the other. If one of our OLB goes down, we bring them up.

Plus Soliai has been great, but he'll need some relief, and I don't see all of that going to Hageman. It would be good to keep them both fresh by using Travian some as well.

"Come get some of this wind up here."

Do we consider Peters and Babs as DE in 3-4 or do they spell Soliaia sometimes also?

I like Starr and Smith to the PS. I don't think they've shown enough in preseason to have anyone coming after them.

I think there is definately at least 2 players that arent on the roster now.

OFFENSE (25)

QB (3)

Ryan, Yates, Renfree

I think they have seen enough from Refree that they wont want to let him on another team in the case Ryan or Yates would get hurt.

RB (5)

Jackson, Rodgers, Freeman, Smith, DiMarco

WR (5)

White, Jones, Douglas, Hester, Weems

Reedy is a hero from Friday night lights and game1, but Amsterdam has been more consistant. Reedy and Boldewjin will be PS guys, and can come to 53 if there is an injury.

TE (3)

Toilolo, Pascoe, Shuler (or FREE AGENT)

I just dont think we go in with only 2. I could see a cuts player added in place of one if a good 'move' TE comes available.

OL (9)

Matthews, Blalock, Hawley, Asamoah, Holmes, Carimi, Konz, Gunn, FREE AGENT

Havent heard much love for Jones, and I think they put him on the PS and look for a guy at cuts.

DEFENSE: (25)

DL (7)

Soliai, Babinueax, Jackson, Hageman, Robertson, Goodman, Umenyiora

Osi is versatile, but figured him as DL as his role will be nickle/dime pass rusher

OLB (4)

Massaquoi, Maponga, Biermann, FREE AGENT

Neither Smith or Starr are good enough for this roster. Both can find a spot on the expanded PS.

ILB (4)

Worrilow, Shembo, Bartu, Dobbins

I would like to see a better FREE AGENT ILB considered here to replace Dobbins. Dobbins is very mediocre, but should be OK for patchwork if needed on D.

CB (5)

Trufant, Alford, McClain, Arenas, Wilson

Allen to PS, going with vets in a pass happy NFL.

S (5)

Moore, Lowery, Ishmael, Southward, Baker

Baker has too much potential to risk losing with an injury proned FS starter (Lowery) and a raw rookie (Southward).

ST (3)

K - Bryant

P - Bosher

LS - Harris
