slewis1952 273
Handoff up the middle and lose 1/2 yard.. You say its only pre-season? This is when you try new things. Mike Smith did this during REGULAR season and missed time after time. What is his problem? Conservative? Scared? Unsure? Here is the kicker.,,,,,, I do like Mike Smith. This is the one thing that drives me absolutely crazy. It may be Kotter's problem. I just stared at the tv in silence. All of our weapons and we hand off up the middle to a pint size running back.Just before halftime Atlanta . Timeout #1 by TEN at 00:51. 4th and 1 at TEN 20 (:51) J.Rodgers left guard to TEN 20 for no gain (K.Wimbley; S.Hill). Edited August 25, 2014 by slewis1952
falcons4life 529
Get in line, nobody was happy to see that same play. Hopefully part of "The Process" includes Smitty and Koetter realizing that midget RBs won't succeed on a dive play on 4th and 1.

FalconFromSpain 207
The problem was not running up the middle with Quizz. the problem of the play is that we tried to confuse the defense with 3 wr 1te and 1rb to make the Titans think we were going to pass (playaction maybe) and the defense didnt bite. They got more defenders than we had blockers. My point here is that if we are going to run it, put a heavy formation and if we are going to pass then use the formation we had. slewis1952 273
No!!!!!! There were 16-18 players lined up in the box. Are you telling me that running a small RB into those 16-18 players is a better play than either going wide or throwing a quick slat into 1 on 1 coverage? My point is that this 4th and 1 play calling has been and still is horrible. Experiment now Mike Smith. We know that running into the line doesn't work.
nomak 4,719
I was hoping to see out 6'8" TE get a shot on atleast one of those 1st and goal oppertunities. Edited August 25, 2014 by nomak
Mid-Nite-Toker 7,249
In all, its never the play call, but Smitty's body language when he goes for it...more nervous than any fan. Separates him from SP when it would matter. From a Smitty supporter.
Rajhae Battle 624
I feel more comfortable going for 4th & 8 than 4th & 1, Smith must feel that we can't just line up & punch someone in the mouth for a yard. I hate to see it Edited August 25, 2014 by Rajhae Battle

Coach_Petrino 308
I think we need to be able to run for it on 4th and 1. Smith was just trying to do that in preseason, and will use our failure to convert to try to correct the problem before the regular season. Say what you want, but preseason is not really about winning, it's about evaluating your personnel and correcting problems before the real games start.

HOYLE 540
The call is perfect, if we execute. We have to be able to dothat whenever we want to. Scheming for a yard is fools play.
Jesus 26,404
It was a test for the line. Had this been the reg season we would have kicked the 3.
Cheyakita 905
The sooner you guys realize we need to re establish that one yard gain the better. What hurts us the most is bringing in that tackle as an extra blocker, just run a single back set so you can check out if they stacked the line.
Abe 1,038
I believe he just wanted to see if our new line could man up and get that yard.

Scheming for a yard is fools play.If any team with a decent OL could punch in a 4th&1 you wouldn't see goal line stands in the NFL. They stacked the box more than we did - it's math. Dumb playcall. newgafatboy 578
the reason they didn't go to the jumbo package was they didn't want the defense to get a chance to put their big lineman in..with that said even with our jumbo package we don't have a big back that can get that much needed 1 yard with all those big bodies in, either put in a big defensive lineman to run the ball ie the "Fridge" or they need to bounce it out, or how about a play fake and throw to a tight end or a boot leg anything but the same ol midget up the middle.. Dominique is Manufique 638
getting up in arms about a preseason play call. jesus. the point of preseason is to evaluate players - not to out scheme your opponent. no reason to audible the play call. mike smith wanted to see how the line would handle being outnumbered inside the box. big deal. oh nooooooooooo... toadfishtom 5,526
What makes it so bad is the fact that this exact scenario has already played out in the regular season and the playoffs quite a few times, and guess what the result was each time ?
EightyEight 1,496
I would honestly see if Travian Robertson could be involved somehow. He's supposedly the strongest guy on the team.
