The New Orleans Saints' prized free-agency acquisition, safety Jairus Byrd, is undergoing back surgery Thursday that the team is hoping will have him back at full speed in time for training camp.

Coach Sean Payton says Jairus Byrd will likely miss all of OTAs and minicamp but expects the safety to "start up training camp with no problem."

Coach Sean Payton described the surgery as "something that didn't need to be done" but that all parties decided would be best for Byrd long-term after a disc issue had been nagging him for the past month -- and even before Byrd joined the Saints.

Payton said Byrd will probably miss all of OTAs and minicamp over the next month. But he expects him to "start up training camp with no problem."

"It's been asymptomatic, but it's something we wanted to do -- and he as well -- to alleviate or avoid any issues in the fall," Payton said.

Byrd left the Pro Bowl in January with a back injury, though it's unclear if it was the same issue. Payton said the issue had come up "probably in the last month during the weightlifting, and it's something that he's dealt with before."

"This is something after the doctors looked at it, and the specialists out in [Los Angeles] looked at it, [they] felt this was one scenario that would kind of take care of it rather than try to [keep managing it]," Payton said. "If it was during the season, you wouldn't go through the procedure. You would treat it symptomatically then."

The Saints certainly hope they get Byrd back at full speed after making a huge investment in him this offseason. The three-time Pro Bowler signed a six-year, $54 million contract that included $20.3 million in guaranteed money, plus another $6 million guaranteed for injury only.

The team is counting on Byrd to help generate turnovers -- a top priority for the defense. Byrd had 22 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles in five seasons with the Buffalo Bills.

On a positive injury note for the Saints, standout safety Kenny Vaccaro was full-go during Thursday's OTA session (the first practice that was open to the media) after he ended his rookie season on injured reserve with a fractured ankle. Vaccaro and veteran safety Rafael Bush took reps with the first-string defense.

Yeah yeah yeah. Talk about the Falcons. Bite me

oh well. I'm not gonna lose much sleep over it if it gets moved. I put something about a rival here the same way you post your mocks here. We're both *** holes

Technically speaking, my mocks have more to do with the Atlanta Falcons than an article about a New Orleans Saints player getting offseason surgery does since I'm talking about who the Falcons could possibly draft and not just talking about a rival's misfortune to get attention. To each their own, I suppose.

Isn't there a separate section for mocks though. Yeah I figured. Like I said, we're both *** holes. Who woulda thunk it

Actually, no.

There's a Draft & Free Agency forum, but no designated area for mock drafts like a lot of team's message boards have from what I've seen. If you wanted to imply a rule of common sense, then I would ask you why there was a pinned Free Agency thread at the top of TATF for so long.

So a mod posted something that belongs in a separate forum as well. Guess all 3 of us are *** holes. Read the last part of the OP. I'm assuming you're the only one that applies to. From now on when you post your mocks over here, I'll remind you where they go.

come on women, you know this is where it would go. Unless you lack common sense.....which is really up for debate

And where is that, again? As I've stated, there is no designated place for mock drafts which actually have something to do with the Falcons.

make sure you act like little ***** a week or 2 before the season starts as well when people are posting saints threads everyday. You know where your mocks belong just like I know where this belongs. We're both *** holes. Deal with it

You mean when our opponent is actually relevant?

We've got to play four other teams before we play the Saints, and the article states that the procedure is minor and he's not expected to miss any considerable time. Hardly anything that effects us.

Seriously.....

Mocks go in draft and free agency

This goes in around the league

No one in these boards ever follows the rules. We are mostly on this one so everyone posts the news they hear first here. Sheesh.

Byrd was wanted by most of the board

Saints are a division rival we play soon

Byrd went to the saints hence it's related because it may have an effect on our upcoming game.

See how easy it is to spin any story
