The Impact Of Keith Armstrong On Hester

Recommended Posts

Coach Keith Armstrong is arguably one of the most successful special teams coaches in the NFL. His units have post outstanding numbers over the years. This season the Falcons have given Coach Armstrong one of, if not the best return specialist in NFL history no other than Devin Hester. The impact Coach Armstrong could have on Hester is off the charts. Conversely, the impact Hester could have on the Falcons return game is insane. I can't wait to see this new high flying physical team the Falcon's front has built.

The only thing I can argue is that while Hester is the best return man we have had since Deion I hope they dont try to handcuff him into making fair catches when we are in this territory and just let him do what we bought him here for.

The coach isn't there only for Hester, he is there for the sake of everyone else on special teams so that Hester can be successful.

What? Are you stupid? No he's not in place only for Hester you idiot. You irk me with that stupid post. The point I was making was Coach Armstrong being one of the better specail teams coaches in the NFL could be more creative with a guy like Hester. Obviosuly he would coach all the guys assigned to special teams. I'm really irked with your post.

Keith Armstrong's "speciality" is definitely not the return game. He's fielded some outstanding coverage units, and some piss poor coverage units. Either Armstrong or Smith is the coach telling our PR's to fair catch as often as they do. I personally don't think Armstrong is a very good coach.

blocking is the key. Can't just catch the ball and get murdered

Coach Armstrong has not had a true return guys since Weems. I think maybe playing it safe with a guy like Franks was the best option. The front office negelected the return game. They finally addressed the issue with Hester. We'll see just how good Coach Armstrong really is. Dude will be a head coach before long. He has a football mind.

A few things with Hester:

1) People need to get comfortable with the idea that he's a maddening player to watch. As great a returner as he can be, he can be equally frustrating with his decision making re: running backwards or trying to return in bad situations.

2) I DO think we need to allow Hester the freedom to return kickoffs from deep in the endzone. I think field position is vastly underrated and too frequently, we have been content to allow our returners to take a knee 7-8 yards in the endzone. If we're going to get value from Hester, we need to take the chance that he gets tackled at the 15 sometimes for the upside of him giving us extra field position returns

I think we've done decent in kick coverage and punt coverage for a few years. It'll be nice to see if we can generate yardage in the return game...I feel like thats an area where we've struggled recently.

If they don't get the blocking under control it will be fair catching made still. The return game isn't just about catching and running. You have to have the ability to see the ball and guys coming.

Second punters will punt the ball very high on us to give guys a chance to get down field and force a fair catch. I don't think the coaches are just telling guys to "fair catch". Sometines their could've been a return but for the most part guys were on our return man whoever it was.

We lost some key guys that blocked on special teams either by becoming a starter or by get cut. Devin is a shifty dude but he still needs some blocking. He didn't do all those amazing runs by himself. There were lanes most of the time. We've had piss poor blocking in the return game for a number of years now. A lot of these new guys will have to make the team by being a special teams ace.

That's the only thing I'd say give him the freedom to do is come out deep if he feels it. Our blocking has been piss poor in the return game lately. I don't know if the rules made em non chalant about blocking or what but the blocking has declined the last few years and we spring leaks early after the kick and guys get down field on us fast.
