Rhrp Pedro Beato Claimed Off Waivers

Recommended Posts

The Braves have claimed 27-year-old RH reliever Pedro Beato off waivers from the Reds. He has been added to the major league roster and will be available to pitch Friday against Washington. The Braves have not announced the off-setting transaction, but it is speculated that Ryan Buchter will be sent to AAA.

Beato was a first round draft pick by the Orioles in 2006. He never made it to the majors with Baltimore and was selected in the Rule V draft by the Mets before the 2011 season. His tenure with the Mets was unremarkable, appearing in 67 games over a season and a half, all in relief, with a 4.67 ERA.

On August 16, 2012, he was traded to the Red Sox as the player-to-be-named in a deal for veteran catcher Kelly Stoppacch. He pitched to a 4.08 ERA in 17 appearances for Boston through last season, bouncing between Boston and AAA Pawtucket. He pitched well for Pawtucket in 2013, with a 2.98 ERA in 34 appearances. Cincinnati claimed him off waivers in the off-season, and was one of the team's last cuts just before the season.

Beato is 6-6", 230 lbs. He throws a four-seam fastball with good movement that tops out around 96 MPH. He throws a slider as a secondary pitch, but has had trouble locating in the past. He has experimented with both a curve and a change-up, but neither pitch has stuck.

In other words, a long-time AAAA reliever that won't make any waves; however, this is the kind of pitcher that Roger McDowell excels with (see O'Flaherty, Varvaro, Carpenter...), so who knows.
