$10.5M Left Under The Cap

Recommended Posts

According to a tweet from DOL, the Falcons are currently around $15.5m under the cap, and will need to allocate around $5m of that to the rookie draft pool, leaving around $10.5m left to spend on free agents.

That could always increase if we need it to by freeing up another $3m or so from cutting Osi if we choose to; and also if we restructure and extend Roddy's contract reducing his cap hit this year.

We have to take into account that the Falcons, like most teams, usually try to leave themselves a few million dollars under the cap in case they need to make midseason acquisitions to fill the spots of injured players.

So as of today, we realistically have about $8 to $9m still available to spend on mid-tier free agents.

No they have 15.5 mil left to spend if thats what there cap space is

They can always create more cap space with restructures for the rookies cap hits

Not if they don't wish to do so, which is how TD has traditionally managed to keep us in a healthy cap situation year after year. In which case, I'll refer you to the original post.

With our 10.5m to spend on free agents, we might end up adding 1 more free agent after giving the market some time to settle. Once some of these FA's are sitting out there realizing they aren't worth what they thought they were, then we can swoop in and get some team friendly deals.

I don't really see any free agent FS worth a sack of footballs right now. You can bet if Clemons was worth anything, Nolan would be all over him right about now since he coached him in Miami. The fact we haven't shown interest in him should tell you all you need to know about him. FS is going to have to come from the draft, or someone a team cuts down the road.

I could see us grabbing a TE in free agency still. Someone like Daniels or Pettigrew.

Other than that, we might just grab some people to bolster depth at a few positions. There aren't really any quality OT's to try and pick up.

My guess is we sign maybe one more FA before the draft, then save our money for the post draft cuts that always happen and try to get a deal on a few FA's then.

I'm assuming Roddy and Julio's extensions will basically offset each other (probably not even that good): the savings from Roddy's extension will go to pay off Julio's extension. Basically, while Julio was on his rookie contract, Roddy was our highest paid receiver. Now, it will reverse and Julio will be paid more than Roddy. Roddy will take a pay cut, hopefully finish his career with the organization that drafted him, and win a Super Bowl or two.

But that won't effectively create us any longterm cap space. Maybe for one year...but I think it's clear based on the contracts that were signed this week that we're not interested in winning just one championship.

I say we buy good safety (maybe Chancellor) a good tight end (maybe Owen Daniels). A backup NG on the cheap. Then use the draft to pick up a starting left or right tackle plus some depth at LB and on the interior of the offensive line. And then get ready for battle.

Also need a little cap room to be able to respond to injuries during camp and the preseason.

That number is incomplete. After removing Hawley and Johnson's contracts, we have somewhere just over 13.5. And yes, all of that, we can spend, since we are, bare minimum, still going to extend Roddy this offseason, so the money for the rookies will come from that and others.

Cam Chancellor is locked up long term for Seattle. I think his contract does not expire until 2017 or something like that.

Chancellor? Dude is just a big hitter. He sucks in coverage and is not as good a W Moore. So he would not be a good fit. We need a FS and he is only an in the box SS. Plus he's not a FA.
