theDIRTYcode
Ian Rapoport ✔ @RapSheetFollowThe #Panthers are attempting to trade WR Steve Smith, per source. Given his $7M cap number and age (34), seems unlikely.4:58 PM - 10 Mar 2014That gives them exactly 0 WRS under contract. Exactly who is Cam going to be throwing to next year? Big Bubba
If Gman (GM) asked him to take a paycut for the betterment of the team.........and SS89 outright declined..then I understand the need to trade or release SS89.SS89 is 34 years old, a short WR that can't really get open anymore.... I love the guy and he will always be one of my favorite WRs of ALL TIME. We need to stop the tradition that hurney and company set. Paying guys through the nose and caring more about the family side of the game than the business side....while we lose year after year. I can't wait until the Dwill and Stewart abomination contracts are over with.
theDIRTYcode
Maybe Carolina will package 6 picks to move up for Watkins.I'd swap with them for Kuechly.
Big Bubba
Or maybe the front office is viewing stuff differently than most of us..Cam can never truly make the team his until SS89 is gone. SS89 has an overpowering personality.... very few Qbs in the league could come in and take those reigns from him. Given the fact that he is the greatest player in the franchises short history....and he knows it. I don't know. I'm just throwing sh1t against the wall. theDIRTYcode
If I read correctly, if they cut Smith he costs the team 2 million in cap space this year, frees up about 10 next year. So you're gonna decrease this years cap, but you don't have any WRs for Cam.Easiest mock draft in history at that point:WRWRWRWROTWROG
Big Bubba
Gman better hopes he can land Nicks... I view Nicks as the only legit #1 WR in FA.Then maybe Jacoby Jones for cheap............and then draft a WR in the first.

Born A-Ginn
Apparently he's having dinner over at JR's house tonight and saying his goodbyes. Word is he's getting cut tomorrow.Wow... never imagined it ending like this. Thought he'd be here at least 2 more years and leave on his own terms.End of an era for us. Think ima go get plastered tonight and watch Steve Smith highlights.
falconidae
Panthers owe Smith 7 mil in salary in 15 and 10 mil in salary in 16. To keep him on the roster, they'd have to re-structure, which would make the dead money worse next year. they can't afford to keep him.Think Gettleman may have announced Smith's status through the press to get Smith to leave. Smith was going to be p#ss#d getting the news secondhand, Gettleman had to know that.

SaintRay
In the age of salary caps, I'm onboard that teams need to part ways with older players with fat contracts before the team suffers for having stayed the course. It can be done right for both parties, but the players sometimes can't give it up when others can see the decline in ability.
jungleking
If he has to go, I just hope it's to an AFC contender. Would love to see him win one, but I don't want to play against him.

Guest F_A_1_C_O_N
Roddy next falcons honor their players usually. Abraham being the exception. We don't dog our qb for his interceptions, when the truth is the defense sucked.we don't decide to not honor our contracts just cause a player got older. A gm should know the player is not going to stay 29 for that entire 6 year contract, right?Lastly we don't ask our qb to take a huge pay cut when it was the defenses problem. Y'all operate that way. And y'all don't see the playoffs. Maybe dusch bag is not the way.....just a thought

Stop it.Smith is the face of the entire nfc south. He was here when it started and he should honestly be here when it ends. He is doing great and this gm is ***** if he thinks he needs to reduce Smith pay. Why reduce his pay?¿? You have anything other then age? Stop being scarred of a guy getting old. He got hurt in one game at the very end of the season and played the next game. And he performed great all season. Also don't think i don't knock my own team around. i just ripped Matt a couple says ago for saying he couldn't do anything with lance moore. -so keep dreaming I'm a homer and a hater. Guest F_A_1_C_O_N
The falcons treat their players with honor?Except for Abraham? That's their most recent older veteran they've dealt with and to me the brain trust failed and he was treated with anything but honor They signed another retread to replace him who has been asked to take a paycut. How's that for honorlast year showed how poorly the falcons roster is built. Y'all thought 2013 was gonna be a cake walk to a championship. A masterpiece of a season to crown an all time greats career. And if you truly payed attention you would see how closely the falcons path has followed the cowboys of 2009 on. The weak roster with little depth. The declining defense. Bad O line play. A QB who's asked to perform miracles to keep the team in games weekly. A return to division domination is not guaranteed. As it stands they are the 3rd best team in that division Behind a team with an elite offense and a team with an elite defense. What do the falcons have? You can try to spin your answer as much as you want But Truth of the matter is the falcons are a 4-12 team with a lot more questions than answers With $40 mil to spend that isn't exactly a good thing considering the GM's track record. yawn, you done yet? How is those play off appearances working out for you? You know since your team is so much better. And we have one bad season out of how many since Thomas took over? That's evident. The Panthers are at the top of the NFCS at this moment and have a young core and a long window of opportunity ahead of them. No point in wasting your window keeping old declining players. Edited March 11, 2014 by NYG4
