The Nfl's Best Gms...... #10. Thomas Dimitroff

10. Thomas Dimitroff

By any measure, Dimitroff’s Falcons tenure has been a success. A team that had never had back-to-back winning seasons before his arrival has reached the playoffs in 4-of-6 years, and came within five points of the Super Bowl in 2012-13. Dimitroff found a franchise quarterback in his fourth month on the job. A bold trade three years later landed him one of the league’s best receivers. But as the Falcons ascended, Dimitroff allowed certain problems to fester as the good times rolled. He paid the piper in 2013. Both his offensive and defensive lines were exposed as woefully undermanned, while a team that had been described as “finesse” even when it was winning proved to be a paper tiger as it got battered en route to 4-12. The Falcons’ running game continued its downward spiral as Steven Jackson continued his. None of these trouble spots came as a particular surprise to outside observers, but Dimitroff apparently had to have his problems sock him in the kisser before he decided to address them. That’s exactly what he plans to do this offseason, stocking up in the trenches while getting tougher everywhere. That might not be the easiest thing to do for a general manager who’s notoriously obsessive about “character,” but he’s just as fixated on something else: Winning. The whole football world knows what adjustments Dimitroff needs to make. Now expect him to make them.

Sounds about right to me......... See the rest here.......

This. ^

It's no secret what the Falcons need to get back into contention.

Dimitroff may as well have a template showing the exact locations on the team where he needs to add talent.

Just a matter of filling in the blanks at this point.

If he fails to address the issues this off-season, it might be time for a random drug test.

Pretty straightforward analysis. It was evident last year we had no depth, especially in the trenches. TD has also acknowledged too much grit was sacrificed on the altar of "character" so far during his tenure, and the OL and DL will have to be strengthened. No secret our running game was in the toilet and also needs to be addressed, as well as LB, safety, kick and punt returner.

What's not so certain is whether TD can abandon his penchant for taking cheap, marginal players in "non-skill" positions and actually pull the trigger on some studs who can make an immediate positive impact. We will start to get a good idea of how aggressive TD & Co. are going to be in addressing our needs with proven talent in about 48 to 72 hours. If they lag back and do nothing, I'm going to be very skeptical of us achieving any significant improvement in the overall quality of the roster, at least during FA, when we should be signing OL and DL players who can start this season.

3rd best record over Dimitroff's 6 year span, but 10th best GM. Is that a back-handed compliment to Mike Smith?

More of a "what have you done for me lately" NFL mentality.

He'd probably have been #3 or #4 on this list following the 2012 season.

I'm excited to see what we do over the next couple of months. I really think we'll see a more aggressive offseason than we've seen at any point under Smith's regime so far.

For all those people complaining about the 2013 season and how poorly it went, I wonder if the same group had this much criticism of TD after the 2008 season. Yeah, we sucked last year because we got hurt and had no depth, but what he did to turn this team around from the nightmare that was the 2007 Atlanta Falcons is enough for me to give him more than a pass for last season.

From an outsiders point of view, it's easy to put him in the top 10 purely based on our record alone. Wait another 5 years, wouldn't be surprised if he's a bottom 10 gm if not demoted to groundskeeper again. He's been riding on mccays players and Smith's coaching. Trufant was drafted because of mike Nolan who us good at picking cbs. Bringing in pioli will only further cover up this cancer.

Of course. All the good is everyone else's fault. That trailblazing, schematic genius Mike Smith, carrying TD to success.

LOL.
