Dimitroff And The Neglecting The Lines Myth.

10 posts in this topic

People love to talk about how "Dimitroff neglects the offensive and defensive lines." But let's take a quick look at this shall we:

2008

1st - OT Sam Baker

5th - DE Kroy Biermann

2009

1st DT Peria Jerry

4th DE Lawrence Sidbury

5th OL Garrett Reynolds

7th DT Vance Walker

2010

3rd DT Corey Peters

3rd OL Mike Johnson

4th OL Joe Hawley

2011

7th OL Andrew Jackson

7th DE Cliff Matthews

2012

2nd OL Peter Konz

3rd OT Lamar Holmes

5th DE Jonathan Massaquoi

7th DT Travian Robertson

2013

4th DE Malliciah Goodman

5th DE Stansly Maponga

In his 6 drafts, he's taken a defensive lineman every single time. He's had an offensive lineman drafted every single time. If all of his players pan out and are healthy, the Falcons have what looks to be a deep offensive line. Currently the Falcons offensive line is heavily drafted by TD, but there isn't much health there. Baker not being healthy/underperforming and Mike Johnson being hurt thrust Lamar Holmes into a spot he wasn't ready for.

What the line should look like:

Sam Baker - Justin Blalock - Peter Konz - Garrett Reynolds - Mike Johnson

What it has looked like:

Lamar Holmes - Justin Blalock - Peter Konz - Garrett Reynolds - Jeremy Trueblood

The interior has been decent, but the tackles have been underperforming. Konz also doesn't have any functional strength and would benefit from the offense moving to a ZBS in run blocking.

On the defensive line, it's obviously a development and injury situation. There's a ton of talent there and most of it is recently drafted too. Corey Peters is quietly putting together a really good season and Babineaux has been good for a while. Peria Jerry has been improved, but Atlanta could benefit from another solid 3rd round DT in this next draft to team long term with Peters/eventually replace Babineaux. That or just re-sign Vance Walker. He's been beasting it in Oakland. At end, there's the true development issue. There needs to be a pass rush coach brought in for sure.

DE Kroy Biermann

DT Peria Jerry

DT Corey Peters

DE Cliff Matthews

DE Jonathan Massaquoi

DT Travian Robertson

DE Malliciah Goodman

DE Stansly Maponga

However, this thought that the lines have been neglected by TD is a total joke. 4 DT's, 6 DE's, 7 OL picks. I just don't see what else he has to do. Does he need to get better at scouting/developing the lines? maybe. But when it comes to just taking them? that's something he's already been doing.

I would rather him have ignored them. Atleast then there would be a chance of him improving the lines next year. Considering he has drafted like 20 O or D linemen and this is what we ended up with is scary

The fact is though that the average Round of these selections is:

OL - 3.6 (7 total)

DL - 4.8 (10 total)

When the only two 1st Rounders (Baker and Jerry) are such misses it hurts badly; and the "average draft round" comes into play significantly.

Only one drafted in the 2nd (Konz)

Three in the 3rd.

Three in the 4th

Four in the 5th

Four in the 7th

*that's a total of only 9 in the first 4 rounds; the two 1st have been 3rd rd talents/performers at best by Baker, even less for Jerry.

Baker, Holmes, and Hawley were reaches for sure.

This is sort of true but not quite. As for "reaches" Baker was seen as a better prospect than Duane Brown....yet Duane Brown has been an All-Pro level tackle. So I don't think "reaching" was the problem there. Durability was.

Jerry was a freak issue.....it sucks but that sort of injury has derailed the career of many DL players.

The truth is, you're probably better off shooting for OL players in the middle/late rounds than not. I think its generally a more coachable position and you tend to find more useful players there. There are other front offices that refuse to draft OL talent early in the draft. And there are teams that have thrown multiple "first day" picks at the OL and received very little in return (The Steelers?).

This upcoming draft, we SHOULD invest in the trenches. We'll be picking in a place where we can go some top notch talent so we should be able to increase the talent pool of those areas.

Well we have missed thus far and guys are not being coached up. What use is it to draft talented lineman when they are not being coached well?

How about signing a proven veteran offensive lineman? Seriously. Thomas Dimitroff and this coaching staff can't develop offensive linemen for heIl.

poor talent evaluation. Maybe needs to fire his scouts? He also gets to cute, tries to out think the room. A OT from So. Miss that hasn't played alot and against lesser competition. Hawly, an undersized OL from Nevada-LasVegas. Really.

2008

1st - OT Sam Baker =miserable reach and a Bust.

5th - DE Kroy Biermann =just a guy, contributes. For a 5th rd pick, pretty good

2009

1st DT Peria Jerry = has not lived up to 1st rd pick. Is a contributer on the level of Peters, a 3rd rd pick.

4th DE Lawrence Sidbury =bust

5th OL Garrett Reynolds= played LT in college. Can't play LT or RT and his height to weight ratio is seriously lacking for a Guard. Leverage battle lost before snap.

7th DT Vance Walker= was a gem in the 7th, thought he was 1 of our more productive DT's. Let walk.

2010

3rd DT Corey Peters= Solid player especially for 3rd.

3rd OL Mike Johnson= will never contribute always hurt, learn from history.

4th OL Joe Hawley - yuck

2011

7th OL Andrew Jackson= nothing

7th DE Cliff Matthews =nothing

2012

2nd OL Peter Konz = getting physically dominated way too much. thought after last yr. he would have taken getting stronger seriously. 1 more yr. for him

3rd OT Lamar Holmes = bust at OT, only hope is moving to guard, but will need to get stronger......still after 2yrs.

5th DE Jonathan Massaquoi =2 yrs later we still don't know what he is

7th DT Travian Robertson =made team as 7th rder, still just a guy

2013 = NO OL in first 5 rounds?!

4th DE Malliciah Goodman = winning playing time, might be a player.

5th DE Stansly Maponga = no idea
