. . . . in my life. I was flabbergasted but not surprised. I was lambasted for being a gay male, yet I know several men in the church who love lesbian sex. Talk about a double standard. Don't get me started on the collection. The plate came around twice. I was mocked in what was mostly a black church for being mixed. The preacher called me to the front and put me on blast in front of everyone saying I needed to be delivered.

I have been an atheist all if my life and I dont see or feel anything to change that.

sorry for that experience... i would have pointed out half the congregation that had kids outside of wedlock or the decons cheating on their wives. The collection plate thing is one for tithes, the other is for offerings, they are 2 separate things. Did they know you personally to call you out like that? He probably watches porn himself

I would suggest you keep searching for a church. There are plenty out there that you will feel comfortable in. There will always be hypocrisy, every where you go. If you can put up with the hypocrites at work, you can put up with them at church. As far as the collection plate goes, it's all about perspective. You obviously saw them taking your hard earned money and for others it was a chance to give. I am a white man married to a black woman and have a biracial son and I have been to a number of black, white, and multi-cultural churches and have never had an issue with race.

Well as long as you went to one parish, then it is fair to assume that all religion is false. Best to move on, because there are no isolated examples of d-bag non-believers anywhere.

That's how I determine truth, anyway.

I was going to make essentially the same point, but with out the sarcasm, which might not be the best approach when explaining to folks that there are more positive paths to God. (Oops, and there I go doing it myself.)

To the OP, I have actually attended a gay wedding at a predominately black church, as well as Shabbat (sabbath) services at a predominately gay synagogue. It is also my understanding that Presbetarian Churches tend to me more tolerant.

I am not sure of the point of your original post, but I hope you don't let the one bad experience cloud you opinion of, or dissuade your participation with, religion in general and Christianity in particular.

I doubt we have any homosexuals in our parish, but we wouldn't bring them up front and put them on blast. If anything, I'd suggest they get in line for confession behind me, since my sins are worse than theirs.

We do have couple of lovely mixed race couples, though. One of them has the prettiest little biracial babies you've ever seen. And that's not to mention the eastern Europeans and middle easterners, etc. Ours is a pretty diverse parish.

Re: hypocrisy, my grandfather always responded to people who said "I don't go to church because there are too many hypocrites" by saying "that's the best place for them."
