Granted, the guy is coming off a bad hammy. I wonder how much he'll get. Dude is a solid player.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported last week that the Green Bay Packers were prepared to cut ties with linebacker Desmond Bishop after failing to find a trade partner.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Ty Dunne confirmed Monday that Bishop officially will be released by the Packers. The team later announced, via a release, that Bishop indeed had been cut.

Best of 2012: Green Bay Packers

Take a look at the best photos from the Green Bay Packers' 2012 season.

Bishop was one of the few defensive bright spots as the Packers' leading tackler in 2011 before missing the 2012 season with a ruptured right hamstring. The Packers once thought highly enough of Bishop to give him a four-year, $19 million contract, but now it looks like they will give the position to Brad Jones after Jones exceeded expectations in run support and pass coverage last season.

Cutting Bishop gives the Packers $3.464 million more in salary-cap room, Joel Corry of The National Football Post reported Monday. Bishop will count $800,000 on the 2014 salary cap, according to Corry.

Still recovering from hamstring surgery, Bishop was limited to side work during the Packers' recent minicamp. Although he expects to get the green light for training camp, the injury might have played a role in his release.

It will be interesting to see if Bishop lands on his feet with the Kansas City Chiefs or Oakland Raiders. Chiefs general manager John Dorsey and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie were right-hand men to Packers general manager Ted Thompson's before landing with their current teams.

The Chiefs' 3-4 defense is the better scheme fit between the two teams. Dorsey surely realizes a healthy Bishop would be an upgrade over Akeem Jordan and fourth-round pick Nico Johnson next to Derrick Johnson.

UPDATE: Bishop told Jason Wilde of ESPNWisconsin.com he will visit Tuesday with the Minnesota Vikings. Wilde added that Bishop told him the team never talked about Bishop taking a pay cut and only considered either trading or releasing him.

Will be a VIking

He's due to visit them but I don't know. Besides AP, that team is nothing. I can't foresee AP having an epic year again this year. Granted he will be really good but he almost broke the rushing record. Seasons like that usually don't duplicate.

Depends on what he is looking for I guess. If he wants to get paid or wants to play for a contender.

so did we. Do you think that means other teams wouldn't want Spoon?

Some of yall need to really work on how you talk to ppl. I just asked because I dont know much about him. Trying to be a smart @zz isnt needed. Save that shjt for someone else. How about a real answer like buddy I quoted below gave?

He was out all year last year.

That LB core was pretty bad that year too. How is his pass coverage skills? Is he a solid pass-rusher or does he shed blocks pretty well?

Just cuz the LB core as a whole wasnt great doesnt mean he wasnt. Bishop is actually a pretty solid player. Kinda in the mold of a lofton and Dent eith better coverage skills. Btw even if their LB core was bad are you telling me you wouldnt want a clay Matthews if we ran a 3-4? He was part of that LB core. Not to mention Bishop miss the whole season.

in my opinion we did. Dent wasn't that impressive and Nic was decent. Spoon was better than the other two but even he missed quite a few tackles that he normally would make

Well to be fair our safeties were worse than our LB in tackling. But Falcons LB get lot of crap for playoffs, and Our safeties were worse in that game. The LB did a good job covering TE, except against movile QB. That, includes the game against CAR. Dent was the best tackler on the team followed by Nics.

Right but you're comparing the best LB on their team to a guy who was cut and missed a year due to injury.

All starts with DTs IMO.

If one of them could take on 2 blockers then we wouldn't have to commit 2 Lbers to stopping a running QB also they would be able to roam better.

he was cut due to Salary. Kinda like why we cut Abe. Doesnt speak of his skill level if your cut due to salary reasons. Judging a player just as a whole Unit doesnt do the player Justice.

Would have thought we would have brought this guy in before we brought in another TE.... just saying

Do you honestly think that our front office didn't go through the motions? Serious question. I personally think that the FO is looking at him but won't rush into it , that isn't our style. " our style " makes certain folks angry and or impatient sometimes but it works. If he shows he is recovered from the torn hammy then by all means.
