Back Up Qb?

Recommended Posts

Forgive me as it appears I may be a little late to this party, but I just found out Luke McCown signed with the Saints. I didn't think he was a very good option when we had him, but that's besides the point.

I've been racking my brain trying to think about who we could sign or trade for. I know DD has some potential and played well in the preseason. But let's be real...the Falcons have built their team and are ready to make a run this year. If Matt goes down for any considerable amount of time, especially toward the end of the season, we need a solid/proven QB to step in and take us the rest of the way. There is no way DD is going to be that guy...is there?

Well DD won't be solid or proven, but then again the Pack had Flynn as a backup and he wasn't solid or proven... DD worries me a lil bit just as he has no experience and was an UDFA, but I wouldn't count him out. If we don't pick anybody up, I won't be upset. If we do, I'll be fine with that too.

You never know man. They could either be waiting for cap casualties to see what QBs are out there or they are just comfortable enough with DD after a season on the team. Either way they had zero problem with letting go of McClown. I think we are going to see a lot more of DD this year in camp and in the preseason. He is a pretty smart kid and should be a pretty nice backup to have. I am thinking the coaches are happy with him and will only bring in another rook as a camp body that they will end up stashing on the practice squad.

I typically wouldn't mind DD being the primary back-up. But a typicall Falcons team is 9-7 or 10-6. The expectations this year are going to be so high. If, God forbid, Matt Ryan gets hurt and is out for a considerable amount of time, do you feel comfortable with DD leading a march into the playoffs? I dont.

I really think we need to stick with Davis and Draft some bug dummy with a strong arm,

then pick up a UDFA for a camp arm.

Those two duke it out for the PS.

I don't get to vote, but that would be my choice. I think DD now has a year of NFL and should be allowed to try for the backup role. Unless he just unravels, I would just keep him as #2, then maybe some younger guy on the PS. If Ryan was hurt, IR'd or something, there's always guys out there that could be signed to then back up Davis.

You know.........like Jamarcus Russell........unsure.png

No, seriously, there will be guys available. I'm for Ryan/Davis barring any injuries.

Davis soaked up the play book like a sponge last year.

I am really looking forward to him getting some serious

playing time in the preseason, so we can get a closer look at the guy.

No way Davis should have beat both Redman and Wilson for the #3 spot

but he made both of those guys look really bad.

I'm hoping that Davis is making good strides to be the 2nd QB. I really don't have anything to base my opinion on, but I do think he could do okay for us if he is called upon. I've got to think that he is learning from being around Ryan. I would like to think that his athleticism will make it difficult for opposing teams if he does come in.
