What WFW did was go on Whites average numbers that will put him past those two. Obviously if he is hurt or retires that will not be the case but if he stays (he is in great shape) he will surpass those numbers. You can be judged by your peers/contemporaries/coaches and they are giving Roddy all pro and pro bowl status. Why hasn't Colston received those honors? At least Colston had someone throwing him the ball his first three seasons. Roddy is known for hustle, saved two games by chasing down DBs and making them fumble, work ethic, and as a great downfield blocker. You put all that together plus his numbers and accolades and you are saying there is no chance for him to get in? No chance at all?

Roddy white is just like chad johnson good player never great puts up decent numbers while being one of the most targeted WRs

I am hoping that there isn't anybody in here stupid enough to say they know more about statistical analysis than the people at Football Outsiders, so let see what they have to say. BTW...I only went back to 2009 to be fair to Matt Ryan since one could say he didn't have enough experience before that

In case you all don't know it, Football Outsiders has ratings for overall value AND value per play. I will list the ranking for both for each players by year

2012

Colston 6 and 15

White 9 and 20

2011

Colston 6 and 5

White 19 and 45

2010

Colston 15 and 28

White 4 and 26

2009

Colston 7 and 6

White 33 and 48

and before we hear the argument about coverage being concentrated on White more than Colston, here are some notables that fared better than White in every year other than 2010 who don't have an 'elite' QB throwing to them and don't have many other weapons on their offense

2009

Fitz, Sydney Rice, V Jax, Miles Austin, Andre Johnson, Ochocinco

2011

Megatron, Cruz, AJ Green, Fitz, Dez Bryant, Steve Smith (Car)

2012

Megatron, Andre Johnson, Dez Bryant, Michael Crabtree

but I guess if you are paying more than twice as much for Roddy, it has to be justified somehow

Kind of puts it all in perspective.

only for people who have at least an average amount of common sense and intelligence

BTW....when I said "I am hoping that there isn't anybody in here stupid enough to say they know more about statistical analysis than the people at Football Outsiders", I fully expected WFW to jump up and down waving his hand in the air saying "Me, me! Call on me!"

i have some slight doubts about football outsiders. only because at one point after we signed ray Edwards, he was rated as one of the best DEs in the league. i didn't go back after i saw that. i don't really understand the dvoa ratings. ill check it out again tonight on my computer

well I went and checked Pro Football Focus and in most of their analysis Roddy and Colston are neck and neck

I have said before that I would prefer Roddy on first or second down between the 20s, but on third down or in the red zone, give me Colston every time.

edit: and factoring in the cost for the production, give me Colston every time

Colston has been the better value from the start. Picked lower, contrbuted faster, less cost more gain comparatively across the board.

I won't diminish Roddys skills and physical gifts which are obvious. But neither set of numbers lie:

Roddy White cost per:

Touchdown - $1,175,000

Reception - $94,540

Yard - $6,283

Marques Colston cost per:

Touchdown - $412,500

Reception - $48,529

Yard - $3,477

For what they do and what they're paid, Colston is a

STEAL

Colston is also has the benefit in playing for a really pass happy team. White has put numbers up in a run first team that just happened last season to not have a run game.

I wont knock was colston does because he is a great wr and his talent speaks for itself. But White i think we have seen more dimensions out of him.

White has been used in multi roles constantly. he is extremely good at his blocking and engaging D players. He even said if he wasnt playing WR he would play LB. His routes used to be determined to assist the running game with blocks.

We have also seen him stretch the field and no doubt he will do the short dump off stuff or cross the middle with no fear,

Colston is probably better at the deep stuff, but all around White is more well rounded doing a lil of everything great.

If given a real chance id hate to see white with Brees and Colston on the same team. It could be a scary thought. Good thing this was only a joke and as much as saints fans might hate the guy. If he played for the saints he would earn his respect fast.

Its funny because joe (oh crap my hamstring) horn actually was a big part in working with White and stepping up his game as a mentor. Exactly what White is giving back to Jones now.

So we do have a lil saints tie in to Whites skills.

I agree with alot of this EXCEPT, you have one major point wrong.

Since 08 Roddy is the most targeted WR in the NFL. Run first offense or not

You mean like the money Reggie Bust stole from the saints? What is the value of Breezes $20 MIL last season and 7 wins? Maybe if he was paid $38 MIL last season he would have 13 wins and a playoff win like Ice did...

since this was strictly about a comparison between two players, Colston and Roddy, bringing in anybody else is not only irrelevant it is also ignorant

lol not really an excuse.saints offense is wide open. falcons is not. roddys been targeted alot, but therewas no doubt to who the ball was going too. i shouldn't have to explain why that's an important detail.

except that if you go back to my post from Football Outsiders, you will see several WRs rated higher that have the same or worse offensive situation

Yes, the swampers don't want all the details getting in the way. When Roddy had no one to take the heat off him he was routinely double covered and still made the plays!

I really don't believe any amount of statistical analysis or logic will change your mind. Heaps of objective evidence has been presented over the pages of this thread, yet you now come back with this....

I would not be surprized if Roddy's big mouth didn't influence Ryan's thoughts in the huddle on that last play against the 49ers...."I'll push off that defender, get me the ball Mattie Ice."......meanwhile, Gonzalez is running loose....he could have walked into the endzone....sadly, Mattie Ice took Roddy big mouth to heart and tried to force the ball to him. End result....NO SUPERBOWL FOR THE FAILCLOWNS.

Like you didn't already know this SR? WFW has to reiterate the obvious for swampers and has also presented a very good argument for the "possibility" of Roddy getting into the HOF. Yet this is what you come back with?

While that sounds good in theory Ice is to good of a QB to stare down one player. If you look at the play he was being pressured heavily from the right side and he saw Roddy as a quick safety valve. He had no time to spot Gonzo running free because he was about to be sacked.

The fact that you presented a very good argument is subjective at best. Your argument is your opinion, not based on anything really. Stats and facts have been posted and yet you still fail to see the light. It's ok WFW, we all have to check out sometime, and sometime it's not on our own terms. Ride off into the sunset with dignity old man!
