One Reason Freeway Is Still A Free Agent

Dwight Freeney looking for more than Osi Umenyiora’s deal with Falcons

Dwight Freeney has an idea about what the value of his next contract should look like and he’s more than willing to bide his time in hopes of getting it.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Freeney is looking for more than the contract Osi Umenyiora signed with the Atlanta Falcons earlier this week. Umenyiora’s deal is worth $8.5 million over the next two seasons. Freeney is reportedly seeking a contract in the neighborhood of $6 million a season.

Per Rapoport, Freeney is willing to wait out the market in hopes of getting the type of deal he is looking for. In addition to discussions with the Denver Broncos, Freeney is also interested in the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins.

The market for pass rushers this season has been grossly less than many expected. Freeney could find the deal he is searching for by waiting in hopes of an injury sparking a team to team to become desperate or more teams showing interest to drive up the price. Freeney could also see any market he has completely evaporate as teams fill their rosters and run out of room under the salary cap.

Freeney may have to wait until after the draft or even into training camp to find the deal he wants, if it’s coming at all. He may need to be prepared to wait quite a while still in hopes of getting it.

I understand maximizing your earning potential but make Freeny think a team is going to pay him that? He's not 24 tearing the league apart any more.

Players are stupid for having a rookie wage scale. Look what's happening to average salaries now.

Very stupid.

You mean that players are now having to earn and be worth their contract? How idiotic, yeah ...

It means that the players thought how you're thinking, but the owners are thinking " Hey I can get a guy out of college for 1/10th the price of an aging vet or I can offer that vet 1/8th what he would have been "worth" 2 years ago"

And? The players weren't worth the inflated contracts they were recieving in their declining years.

I don't think the players are worth the inflated contracts they receive WITH the rookie wage scale. The rookie wage scale hurt vets way more than they thought it would though. Eric Winston I believe said that this year was a strange year for free agents. It's not going to be just this year, its going to be like this from here on out.
